I am studying under Dr. Todd Kashdan, a researcher who has dedicated a significant portion of his career to understanding the necessary ingredients for healthy and fulfilling romantic relationships. I am the Co-Investigator on a study which he developed to examine the way in which character strengths interact and enhance romantic relationships within daily life.?We believe that such a study is directly in line with the Smart Marriage?s mission, and we would like your help with participant recruitment. ? Participants must be over the age of 18, able to travel to the George Mason University campus in Fairfax, Virginia, English speaking, and in a?monogamous relationship that has lasted for at least 1 year. Participants will be asked to fill out a series of surveys and play 1 computer game. In total, the appointment will last for approximately 1 hour and a half. We then ask that they fill out a 5-minute, nightly survey online at the end of each of the next seven days. ?This survey is completed at their place of residence, and does not require any travel time. ?In total, participants will make up to $65 each, totaling $130 dollars a couple for a little over 2 hours of participation. ?We believe strongly that the results will shed light on the anatomy of happy and healthy relationships. I found it extremely touching and sad. The pain was palpable - first only with the woman. But then (as always happens when you go deeper), there' a sadness for the man as well. I thought it was realistic in the general problem presented; I believe there are a great many of these "deadened marriages" out there. So the movie addresses a very important issue. But I was disappointed that they resorted to lots of unrealistic aspects of the treatment - which detracted from the strong message it sent. . . . (Diane: I had to delete Peggy?s examples here so it wouldn?t spoil the film for anyone who hadn?t yet seen the film.) The scenes during the credits were particularly moving. (So, stay for the credits!) That's when I finally cried. (The powerful message at the ending reminded me of the ending of "The Story of Us.") It?s sad that so many couples never get to that "happy ending," - and I do think this movie could help couples at least decide it's worth working to see if it's possible for them. At the very least, it might generate a dialogue. One thing that happened for us is that James and I were even MORE thankful for the relationship we have. We recognize that we "worked for it;" but it's such a wonderful thing - especially at this point in our lives.
