Sociologist Norval Glen died Feb 25, 2011 - a terrible loss to all of us in
the Marriage Education movement who depended on both his careful and through
research and his thoughtful and balanced analysis of the research of others.
There was never a time when I asked for his help that he didn¹t stop what he
was doing to try to come up with an interpretation or ³translation² of some
of the most perplexing research questions on marriage, divorce rates,
optimal-age-to-marry ­ whatever.  He was a kind and generous genius and we
will miss him so much.  In lieu of flowers, his family asks that we donate
blood or platelets at our local blood bank to help repay the many
transfusions he received in his bone marrow cancer battle.     Obit:

This front page, above-the-fold article in today¹s NY Times opens with a
patient whose life and second marriage are falling apart.  The psychiatrist
tells him not to start talking about it, he isn¹t going to be giving him any
advice, just 15 mins to talk a drug prescription. The psychiatrist, who sees
40 patients a day and runs a long waiting list, is quoted as saying, ³I had
to train myself not to get too interested in their problems. . . ³  I¹m
sharing this to point out that this is an opening so wide we could drive a
Marriage Education train through it.  People need and want advice and
information.  We need to get to the decisions makers/insurers about how
affordable and effective Marriage and Family Education classes are.
