- When Love Is Challenged By An ³Unwelcome Intruder²
by Diane and Lewis on November 4, 2010
A staggering 19 million Americans are diagnosed with depression every
year. When one person in the relationship is depressed, the odds of
divorce occurring are 10 times higher.
We are excited to share what we believe to be a valuable tip. At the Smart
Marriage Conference in July 2010, we attended a session called ²Marriage
and Depression: Coping With Depression As A Couple.² The session leaders,
Dennis Lowe, Ph.D and Emily Scott-Lowe, Ph.D told us that they called the
depression in their marriage the unwelcome intruder. Why? By viewing the
depression as an unwelcome intruder, a couple has an easier time uniting to
meet this external challenge. They are not angry at each other, they are
angry at the unwelcome intruder in the relationship.
Let¹s say the couple dealing with depression can¹t go out and socialize
anymore. One may angrily say, ³Everything is so different; because of you,
we don¹t see friends anymore!² If instead, you view the depression as an
unwelcomed intruder, you may hear, ³I am so angry at what depression is
doing to our social life.²
The Lowes asked us to share this tip-it works-and can make a shift in a
couple instantly. So please pass it along to anyone coping with depression
in his or her marriage or relationship.

- GROWING YOUR COMMUNITY MARRIAGE INITIATIVE: 12-PART CONFERENCE CALL SERIES
To: Community Marriage Leaders
Fm: Experienced Marriage Educators
Hundreds of community healthy marriage initiatives and individual marriage
educators are struggling as they are underfunded, understaffed, and lacking
a volunteer base needed to reach their potential. Even some HHS grantees
with adequate funding do not have the experience or training to create
community-wide relationship and marriage strengthening campaigns.
We are a group of experienced, grassroots marriage educators with the skills
and materials to help you grow your marriage and relationship strengthening
campaigns. Therefore, we are launching a 12-part series of national monthly
conference calls to offer practical suggestions and useful materials to:
· Recruit College Interns to multiply your staff
· Develop and Manage a Volunteer Network
· Work with the Faith Community
· Secure Free Media
· Raise Private Funds
· Raise Government Funds
· Work with Opinion Leaders
· Launch Marriage Celebration Events
· Strengthen Strategic Partnerships
· Use Your Website to Raise Funds, Recruit Volunteers, and Fill the
Classroom
· Build stronger ties to Key Government Agencies
· Reach-Out to Minority and Low-Income Populations
