- The Year Without Sex
A year without sex is probably as bad as two weeks without the Smart
Marriages newslist. Ya figure? Thought this one apt for the last Smart
Marriages email before heading out for Orlando. It¹s certainly another one
of those ³signs of the times² - the new sex ³a casual sort of intimacy
without intimacy.² Oy.
We¹ll begin the conference with the Thursday Luncheon Women: Why
Marriage?! - diane

The Atlantic, June 2010
Hephzibah Anderson is an attractive, successful British journalist in her
early 30s who enjoys a life of jet-setting between London, New York, and
Paris. And after ringing in her 30th birthday, she swore off sex for a year.

Fed up with the "kind of sex I was supposed to be cool with as a
postfeminist, twenty-first century Western woman‹a casual sort of intimacy
without intimacy," Anderson decided to take on a vow of chastity in an
effort to make sense of what was missing in the dating mishaps of her 20s.
The year-long journey Anderson embarked on became about uncovering the sets
of rules, expectations and assumptions that she‹and many women‹often create
for themselves in dating.

Anderson's new book, Chastened, chronicles the ups and downs of her year
without sex. Here, she discusses why sex changes relationships, the
challenges (and benefits) of delaying physical intimacy, and whether her
experiment brought the revelation she was looking for.

- BLACK MARRIAGE DOCUMENTARY TOUR REACHES ORLANDO JULY 7

Orlando Sentinel, July, 1 2010
Lamar and Ronnie Tyler¹s documentary on the marriages of eight African
American couples, You Saved Me, will be shown in Orlando on July 7 at
the Smart Marriages Conference.

The film explores marriage¹s trials, changes, successes, and ultimately the
individual healing that comes out of true love and commitment. It¹s a
follow-up to the Tyler¹s documentary, Happily Ever After: A Positive Image
of Black Marriage. Both films are intended to counter pervasive negative
views of black marriage by promoting positive real-life images of black
couples.

The Orlando screening takes place Wednesday, July 7 at 7:30 pm at Rosen
Shingle Creek Hotel in Orlando. Tickets are $6 and are available online at
www.yousavemeorlando.eventbrite.com. A panel discussion about the state of
marriage in the black community will follow the film. Visit
www.blackandmarriedwithkids.com for updates. The documentary is also
available for purchase at www.amazon.com.

The film is on a 25-city nationwide tour that began in Hampton, Va, in June.
