The new Pew Research is all over the news today so you've probably read/hear
it. It compares 1970s to 2007 and finds that there's been a role reversal
when it comes to men, women and the economics of marriage.
The NPR show is interesting, only 5 mins: http://tinyurl.com/ydzx5m3
Here's the AP version: http://tinyurl.com/ydhruk2
And, it also appeared in the NYTimes and Washington Post....among
everywhere.

- REMARKABLE EDUCATION REVOLUTION IN HARLEM
> Diane,
> Read your post on Head Start evaluation report. Surely attempts to help
> children in the years before they enter school is vital. I recommend that
> everyone listen to Ira Glass (Shirley's son) program, This American Life, on
> Geoffrey Canada's bold attempt to change the life trajectories of poor
> children in Harlem. It may the boldest and most promising experiment ever
> undertaken to change the odds for poor children. I keep thinking how adding
> a component to help parents with their love lives would make it complete and
> perfect. Listen to this inspiring podcast:

> "Going Big" on This American Life. Introduced by Ira Glass but narrated by
> Paul Tough, author of Whatever It Takes: Geoffrey Canada's Quest to Change
> Harlem and America.
> Marline Pearson
(Marline will teach the two-day Love Notes Institute in Orlando)
Yes, I saw this amazing program on 60 Minutes and Oprah and have heard from
Coalition members cross the country who are implementing the Harlem
Children's Zone model in their districts. It's also described in Malcolm
Gladwell's wonderful book, Outliers, which describes why some people succeed
and others never reach their full potential - a MUST read with many lessons
for Marriage Educators or any educators. Order it used on amazon from $10,

- RETHINKING SEX CONFERENCE FEB 6
The Love & Fidelity Network is holding it's first regional conference at
Harvard, Feb 6: Rethinking Sex: Building Healthy Relationships in a Hook-up
World. Fees for the full day conference are $5 for students, $10 for non
students. The conference will feature 3 speakers, all from the Smart
Marriage "bench" (all have presented numerous times at Smart Marriages
Conferences):
John Van Epp, author and founder of loveThinks who will present:
How to Avoid Falling for a Jerk (or Jerkette)
Arthur Nielsen, Northwestern University who will present:
Intimacy, Romantic Love, and Conflict: Practical Suggestions for Single
College Students
Linda Malone-Colon, Hampton University who will present: Hooking In, Not
Hooking Up: Friendship and Intimacy as the Foundation for Fidelity and
Strong Marriages
The mission of the Love & Fidelity Network, founded in 2005, as stated on
their website is to educate, train and equip college students with the
arguments, resources, and direction they need to uphold the institution of
marriage, the unique role of the family, and sexual integrity (chastity) on
their campuses. Not sure, but it appears that they have groups at Harvard,
Princeton, and BYU and on their site they invite members to join.

- OBAMA: SPORTS CENTER ONE OF THE SECRETS TO A GOOD MARRIAGE
Jan 13, 20010
Fox Chicago reports that President Obama has revealed one of the secrets to
a happy marriage; SportsCenter. The President says he watches SportsCenter
almost every day while working out with his wife Michelle, and that she
really knows her sports.
For her part, the First Lady told People magazine: I tend to be more
informed about sports than I'd like.

> Diane,

It's a luncheon so you'd have to pay for lunch. It's $26 pp. (On Thurs,
July 8, a very nice plated lunch.) No extra charge for the keynote.
I wonder, however, if Marline Pearson might let them audit her two-day Love
Notes. That would be a fantastic experience for them. We should check it
out. They'd not receive the included materials, but wouldn't need them to
have a wonderful experience.
> 117 Two Days - Wednesday & Thursday, July 7 & 8 Love Notes, MA Marline
> Pearson, MA We can't wait until they have their 1st (or 2nd) child, or are
> ready to come as a couple. Target youth 16-24 at risk for unplanned pregnancy
> and single parenting (or already pregnant or parenting) to engage them
> (including males) on healthy relationships, sexual meaning & choices, and an
> approach to pregnancy prevention that builds on the importance of fathers in
> the lives of their children. $100 spouse discount. Click for more information:

They might want to make themselves available for 1) child care and/or 2)
exhibit baby-sitting. People are always in need of both - they'd learn a
lot if they work an exhibit and make money doing it. If they're interested,
send me their info and I'll post it here.
