- REMARITAL SATISFACTION SURVEY NEEDS YOU
This one is worthy and is going to need our help because he has such
specific criteria - has to be a second marriage (not a third or fourth) of
less than two years with 4 years or less between marriages. Think hard and
forward to anyone you know who might fit and to all your lists. Or, if you
fit, please do take the survey. Research is our friend! - diane

Hello! I am working on my dissertation, ³The Influence of Divorce Adjustment
on Remarital Satisfaction² through Saint Louis University and need your
help. In this 25-35 minute online survey, I ask participants about their
divorce, their adjustment to the divorce, and about their remarital
satisfaction. The goal is to better understand the divorce adjustment
processes that individuals experience after divorce and their subsequent
satisfaction in their remarriage. When you finish, you can enter a drawing
to win one of five $25.00 gift cards to Walmart.
Requirements: Participants need to be in a SECOND marriage after a divorce,
be in their second marriage for less than two years, and with four years or
less between their divorce and their remarriage.
The first section gives more information and criteria, then the fun begins!!

Please pass this request to other people who might fit the criteria and be
willing to participate.

- THE MORE THE MARRIER :)
Jim Steward, who started all this by asking me for a Conference Banner,
posted two on the Stanislaus site - one on the home page and another on
their Training page. Makes sense and it should help! Do I hear three? :)

- THE POWER OF ONE!!
>
> Diane,
>
> After 11 years of coming to Smart Marriages as the only marriage
> educator ACTIVE in Montana (outside of some church-based programs), I have
> finally gotten the Head Start/Early Head Start programs to join up and
> create their own Couples Class for parents in Missoula. What turned it
> around was getting just ONE HS social worker to Smart Marriages last summer.
>
> We¹ve put together 8 sessions from everything the social worker and I picked
> up at Smart Marriages, and from the resources of another local staff member
> who knows John Gottman¹s research. The agencies didn¹t expect much interest,
> based on attendance at other programs, so we didn¹t limit the number of
> couples in advance big mistake! We had 11 couples the first session, 12-13
> the second and third, and expect 18 couples tomorrow night!
>
> It¹s been a smashing success from my perspective....it's so easy to focus on
> the specific skills we know these couples need, and forget the larger
> picture of just helping them value and respect their relationship, their
> children and each other.
>
> I know that those with federal grants for large Healthy Marriage Initiatives
> might not think this is a big deal, but it is for me. Two HS staff and I are
> doing this in Montana with no funding -- begging stores for door prizes
> (tools from Ace Hardware! Dinner at the Depot!), donating time, bringing
> tablecloths, cloth napkins and candles, and recruiting family members to
> help with child care and set-up.
>
> I¹ve attached a photo we¹re using the old gym in the center of the Head Start
> school. I wish those who think that this shouldn¹t be the business of public
> policy, or a Federal priority, could see how Montana couples respond to
> learning how to create safe, stable, nurturing relationships for their
> children. Just looking at the pictures makes me tear up.

- 60% OF ARMY SUICIDES ATTRIBUTED TO RELATIONSHIP FAILURE
Seattle Post Blog
March 26, 2009
Failed Relationships attribute to 60 percent of Army-wide suicides
In a recent round table discussion with the Army Vice Chief of Staff,
General Chiarelli, Brig. Gen. McGuire, Col. Languirand of the Army Suicide
Prevention Task Force and Dr. Col. Ritchie, and Army Psychiatrist, the
leaders attributed approximately 60 percent of Army suicides to failed
relationships - especially intimate relationship problems.
The Army takes every suicide seriously and personal; and as a result of the
tragic increase has issued an Army-wide standdown to address the issue.
Getting the information to family members of the Guard and Reserve can be
somewhat problematic simply because family members are not required to
attend events and some live remotely. It is vital that word be spread across
the states to all who have loved ones serving so they can be aware of
telling signs that lead to suicide.
For more information on what the Army is doing to prevent suicide, or what
the telling signs are, please contact your local command or Veterans
Affairs.
