- OBAMA: CALL TO SERVICE
Our new president has been sworn in and is now dancing with his wife at 10
inaugural balls. Today he called us all to service. Luckily, we know our
role - we've got our boat all we have to do is row harder and with
increased determination but in the same direction: to bring marriage
knowledge and skills to the country. The First Couple with their beautiful
example of their love, their girls, and their beautiful marriage will
greatly increase the desire for marriage but it doesn't tell couples HOW to
do it - how to build and sustain happy, healthy marriages. That's where we
come in. Yes we can! We are SO ready. It's nice that the Obamas are
dancing to the song At Last I always think of that as the wedding song.
One more little subliminal marriage message. ;) See you in Orlando where
Howard Markman will open the conference with a *Yes We Can!* plenary and
help us tool up and set our strategy. - diane

- COUPLES COACHING
> Dear Diane,
> I am a Geneva based psychologist specialised in singles coaching. I would like
> to go further and coach couples. I wonder if you could recommend an
> established training programme for me to follow, preferably with a mentoring
> programme and follow up that I could adapt to a local audience.

Basically all marriage education is *couples coaching* - many with follow on
mentor programs. You should attend and check out all the programs gathered
in one spot for this week-long event.
A few are more specifically described, coaching-based.
Pat Williams will present a two-day Couples Coach training at the Orlando
Smart Marriages Conference:
> 113 Two Days - Tuesday & Wednesday, July 7 & 8 in ORLANDO
> Life Coaching With Couples: The NEW Profession
> Pat Williams, EdD, Mike Lillibridge, PhD
> Learn the basics of Life Coaching, the PEOPLEMAP personalities assessment, and
> the skills to coach couples to create a more fulfilling relationship. Includes
> skills practice, demonstration and practice-building tips. $100 spouse
> discount. Click for more information:
> http:www.smartmarriages.com/williams.html
And here is their listing on the Smart Marriages program Directory:
http://www.smartmarriages.com/directory/58
And, here is a workshop that will be offered at Smart Marriages Orlando on
the new Mars/Venus Couples Coaching system that offers worldwide support
> Mars Venus Coaching
> Rich Bernstein, Melodie Tucker
> Understand the differences between coaching, consulting, and therapy, the
> benefits of coaching, a variety of coaching processes, and how to join the
> worldwide Mars Venus Coaching team.
And, here on the Smart Marriages Directory, is a list of the programs that
are phone-coaching based:

- CLONING MACHINE
> Hi Diane, quick question. There are several pre-conference institute classes
> which I would LOVE to take but they fall at the same time. (How not to
> marry a Jerk, Mastering the Mysteries of Love, and PREP). Any suggestions on
> how I can approach? Can I order the class DVDs of the ones I don't take and
> still get certified to teach or must I only choose one and then I need to lose
> out on the others? Please advise? Thanks!

The How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk training has been put on DVD as a TOOB (a
teach-out-of-the-box DVD-based program). You can order it and become
certified to teach. Van Epp offers the institute because many people want
the in-person training and teaching guidance. It also trains you in LINKs -
the married version, also abased on the RAM (Relationship Attachment Model).
MML and PREP require in-person training.
So, the answer is that you do have to choose just one unless you have
access to a cloning machine.
Most people take a different training each year.
Note that there are also post conference Institutes. Here's the Orlando
lineup:

> Good morning. I am a marriage educator with Fort Bliss Army Community Service
> Center. I provide this service to active duty military personnel and their
> families.
>
> I am interested in attending the PREP program at your training institute in
> July. I am in the process of submitting my request to do so to my director,
> however I need to verify the cost of the institute. The information I think I
> find on your website is the following: $185.00 per day totaling $655.00 is
> this correct?
>
> If not, please let me know. I would like to get my request in ASAP while

> form ready?

IF you attend ONLY the Prep 3-day Institute, it's 3 x $185 or $555.
However, most people realize that they can ADD the entire Smart Marriages
Conference for only $200 additional. The full conference includes 22 keynote
speakers, 3 lunches, and you can attend seven 90-min workshops (140 from
which to select) - it's quite a deal and adds 28 hrs of CE.
That's because the Prep Institute drops to $130 a day for those that also
attend the conference.
See the website for the keynotes & workshops:
http://www.smartmarriages.com/conferencedetails.html
The full brochure with registration forms should be available to download by
the end of Feb. Or send your mailing address and we'll send you one by mid
March.
Here is are the fees: http://www.smartmarriages.com/conference.fees.html
The hotel is $115 a night single/double and many people find roommates to
split the cost.
