- MORE ON U-SHAPE RESEARCH
> Diane,
> One more (methodological) thought to add to Dr. Glenn¹s comments about the
> U-shaped marital curve. One of the unsolved problems with this research is the
> likely possibility that the very nature of marital quality and satisfaction
> changes over the course of a long-term marriage. Yet the measures employed in
> this research are very basic and static and likely fail to assess the more
> complex and nuanced issues that develop in a long-term relationship, such as
> shared history, deepening understanding, sacrifice, sense of mission and
> purpose, etc. When I talk to students (and reporters) about this research, I
> stress that, at best, we have some evidence that from a hedonistic, consumer,
> individual perspective, marital quality declines over the early years of
> marriage. However, it is extremely likely that our research measures are
> missing much of the meaning and richness that emerge over the long-term as
> couples age together, meaning that more inclusive, nuanced, systemic measures
> might lead to very different outcomes.

- FILM/TOOB: CHILDREN OF DIVORCE: THE TOUGH TRUTH
> Hi Diane,
> I stopped by the SmartMarriages registration desk in San Francisco to ask
> about a sign I saw in the hall about a showing of the movie Children of
> Divorce: The Tough Truth. Mary and I wanted to see it, but we had a plane to
> catch. The woman at the desk didn't have any information about the movie and
> suggested that I email you for information.
>
> I tried google but found no connections with the movie. Any information you
> could provide would be appreciated.
> Ken Himes
Ken, Yes, that film was part of the Marriage Film Festival and it's great -
I highly recommend it. Here's the info from Carri Taylor, writer, director,
producer:
You can order this DVD Series at http://www.ChildrensToughTruth.com. It
comes with a Study Guide, so it is a "workshop-in-a-box" (TOOB). We've had
amazing responses from people who are using it to give folks a much deeper
understanding of how broad the impact of divorce is. Also, how remarriage
can complicate matters even more. At the same time, we end each segment with
hope and examples of how to make these non-traditional families work!
The DVD sells for $39.95, and the PDF Study Guide for $15. Leaders can make
as many copies of the Study Guide as there are participants in a workshop.
We do ask that leaders re-license use of the Study Guide for $15 for each
workshop. Overall, this saves the cost of purchasing a book for each
participant. We would be happy to answer any questions about the product
and it's use.
