- MONEY HABITUDES CARDS NOW AVAILABLE IN SPANISH

Syble Solomon's Money Habitudes cards are now available in Spanish. Syble
had the cards tested by Spanish groups across the country that represent six
different Spanish-speaking countries, before announcing this launch. They
all found the translation to be solid and, as with the English version, both
instructors and couples declared the cards to be fun, helpful, and easy to
use. The cards are an excellent, highly-affordable compliment to ANY
marriage education program and bring insight and understanding to one of the
most confounding issues in marriage - the MONEY conundrum. They help answer
the question: "How can we love each other so much, be so well-suited as a
couple, and have such different HABITUDES about money?!?" The cards are a
great tool for teaching financial literacy to low-education, low-income
couples but bring the same flashes of insight to high-education, rich folks.
As we know, money is an issue - no matter how much, or how little, you have.

Here's a quote from a user in Chicago who ordered 3,000 decks (half in
English, half in Spanish.)

> "Our couples are learning connections between their personality and money they
> never imagined and it has really helped couples talk to each other about
> money. Most of our couples are Spanish speakers, but we also have the cards
> in English (Money Habitudes) as a choice if one person in a bilingual couple
> prefers English." - Maria Buchanan, MA, Mdiv, Family Bridges Community Liason

AND, MORE GOOD NEWS: Syble will also introduce a new MONEY HABITUDES FOR
TEENS deck at Smart Marriages San Francisco.

If you have not yet tried the cards in your own relationship, I encourage
you to do that. And, buy decks for your adult married kids.

Syble will present a Teach-right-out-of-the-Box Tube workshop in San
Francisco:

> 311 - Thurs, July 3, 2:15pm
> Money Habitudes: The Last Taboo TOOB
> Syble Solomon, MEd
> Use a unique card deck to give couples life-changing insights into their
> hidden attitudes about money. Teach groups, use with individual couples, or
> add to any marriage program.

You can order the English, Spanish, or Teen cards at Syble's EXHIBIT at the
conference or at her WEBSITE: www/moneyhabitudes.com

- ASSETS FOR INDEPENDENCE GRANTS EXTENDED

And speaking of MONEY, ACF has not received enough applications for the
AFI/IDA grants designed to help low-income couples build financial
independence. They have extended the application date and will offer a
series of webinars to help organizations figure out what these are and the
process for applying. Listen in and see if there is a way to integrate the
AFI "matching savings" program into what you offer couples - it could be a
great recruitment add-on. See ACF's announcement below. They ask that you
forward this to any/all pertinent lists. URGENT. - diane

Assets for Independence -- Accepting Applications Now!
NEW DUE DATE -- June 25, 2008

The Office of Community Services has announced an additional summer
application cycle for the Assets for Independence program, which funds
individual development account (IDA) projects throughout the nation.
Applications are due by 4:30 p.m. EST Wednesday, June 25, 2008.

Background - ASSETS FOR INDEPENDENCE

The Assets for Independence (AFI) program awards five-year grants to
nonprofit organizations, including FAITH-BASED ORGANIZATIONS, AND GOVERNMENT
AGENCIES THAT EMPOWER LOW-INCOME FAMILIES to be economically self-sufficient
for the long-term. Grantees provide financial education training on money
management issues and assist participants with saving earned income in
special MATCHED savings accounts called individual development accounts
(IDAs). Participants use IDAs to accumulate funds to acquire a home,
capitalize a business, or attend higher education or training. OCS currently
supports more than 400 AFI IDA projects throughout the nation, with more
than 53,000 individuals and families saving earned income in IDAs. Recent
ACF-sponsored research has found meaningful successes with the IDA strategy
(visit http://www.acf.dhhs.gov/programs/ocs/afi/research.html for research
findings and other publications).

OCS is sponsoring a series of orientation conference calls / webinars to
help potential applicants learn about individual development accounts
generally and AFI specifically. The call series starts on May 13 and runs
through early June. More details about the application cycle and the call
series is available at
http://www.acf.hhs.gov/programs/ocs/afi/AFISummer2008.html
