- CONFERENCE FLIERS - FRONT AND BACK
Several of you asked why I'm sending only the front of the conference fliers
this year, when the back has ALL THE CRUCIAL INFO. The reason: I'm in the
middle of trying to learn a new software program. But you're right, anyone
to whom you distribute the fliers, NEEDS the info on the back
(fees/hotel/etc). So, I've created two pdfs and if you upload both, you'll
have both the front AND a back. - diane

- SPEAKING OF TELEVISION
Many of you commented on how wonderful the NBC World News piece was on the
Community Marriage Policy in Oregon but were appalled and sympathetic with
Mike McManus, genius founder/creator of the Community Marriage Policy
concept, that he didn't even get a mention and that they didn't explain how
to contact www.marriagesavers.org so communities could organize their own

Divorce Linked to Child Diabetes
October 24, 2007
According to new Swedish research, divorce and other traumatic family events
increase the risk that children will suffer from diabetes.
Some 17,000 children have been studied over a ten year period.
Professor and Senior Physician Johnny Ludvigsson of the University Hospital
in Linköping tells the newspaper ³Östgöta-Correspondenten² that this is the
first time it has been possible to establish that psychological stress
within a family is linked to the development of antibodies against
insulin-producing cells.
He also says stress can lead to children being overweight, which also
increases the risk of diabetes. The study also indicates a greater chance of
diabetes if breastfeeding ends too early and if babies are given cow¹s milk
during their first months.
Sweden has the second highest occurrence of children¹s diabetes in the
world, after Finland.

- RELIGIOUS LEADERS GATHER IN MARYLAND TO DISCUSS MARITAL BLISS
These are the kinds of articles and programs that give hope and keep us
going - warm the cockles of our hearts:
> Terri Miller of Westminster Baptist Church said her church has started a
> marriage enrichment program during Sunday school time that has seen success.
> More than 30 couples have gotten involved, she said, and 22 couples will be
> attending a marriage enrichment program in Ocean City next weekend.
>
> Miller said she thinks her church¹s program has been so successful because
> it¹s accessible: The church provides child care during the sessions, and
> couples don¹t need to carve any extra time out of their busy schedules to
> attend.
>
> A lot of couples seem to be interested in marriage enrichment but are afraid
> to ask for assistance, she said. Once a program is available, people seem to
> come out of the woodwork to join in, Miller said.
Religious leaders gather to discuss martial bliss
Carroll County Times
By Carrie Annu Knauer, Times Staff Writer
October 24, 2007
Pastors from 25 churches in the Carroll area came together Tuesday to share
what they are doing to strengthen marriages and families within their
communities.
The Pastor¹s Lunch and Learn was hosted by the Marriage Resource Center of
Carroll County, an organization that was established in 2004 by Westminster
residents Bill and Anne McKenna to provide marriage education for unmarried
couples and to train married couples with healthy relationships to mentor
married couples who need help.
The Marriage Resource Center also supports the Central Carroll Community
Marriage Covenant, a set of guidelines for premarital preparation and
community support for marriage. As of Tuesday¹s luncheon, 67 church members
and community leaders had signed the covenant.
Beyond signing the covenant, local churches are asked to develop programs or
ministries to support marriage in their communities, said Bill McKenna.
Statistics show high divorce rates across the country, regardless of whether
a couple attends church or not, McKenna said. This means that the faith
community is not doing enough to support marriages within its churches, he
said, and also that there is a huge potential to reach out to community
members who do not attend church as well.
Amy Gilford, community relations director for the Marriage Resource Center,
said the center tries to focus on pre-marriage training to help couples
avoid problems before they get to the need for marital counseling or are
talking about divorce. Often, it¹s too late even once the couple gets
engaged; their minds are made up, and they¹re going to go through with the
marriage regardless of what comes up during their premarital training in
their church.
Gilford said she¹s working on programs aimed at singles or divorced
individuals to help people from settling on the wrong person. ³How to Avoid
Marrying a Jerk or Jerkette² is a five-week series to help individuals use
their heads, not just their hearts, when it comes to picking a life partner.
