- BLACK MARRIAGE DAY, COLUMBUS OHIO
For Black Marriage Day, we are hosting a luncheon "Rebuilding the
Cornerstone: A Leaders' Call to Action!" The luncheon, on March 22,
featuring a keynote address by Senator Ray Miller and a number of notable
platform guests, will bring together concerned citizens, city, state,
grassroots leaders and marriage champions from all over Ohio, to examine the
benefits of marriage in the African American community for individuals,
couples, children, businesses and the community-at-large, as well as to
raise awareness and charge leaders to do something in their respective
domains.
The luncheon will be followed by a leaders' training designed to support
leaders and their spouses as they sacrifice while leading the charge for
others.

- ADHD AND DIVORCE ABC 7 Medical: ADHD and Divorce February 26, 2007
- WJLA Script - (Excuse the CAPS - it came that way. Also, I know some of
you will write and say this is just our cultures tendency to diagnose and
put a "disease" label on everything, like the tendency to be scattered and
messy. AND that this these tendencies are emphasized in a marriage – or,
even if you have a roommate. If you're living with someone that is neat and
compulsively organized, it makes your tendency to be scattered appear worse
or even to get worse as you can count on "Mr/Ms orderly" to carry the day.
BUT, it's always interesting to see the trends. ADHD and Divorce is
probably a new trend. No workshop on it at the Denver conference, but who
knows, maybe in '08. - diane)
Anchor: NEW TONIGHT... DIVORCE AND ADHD.
EXPERTS SAY ATTENTION DEFICIT AND HYPERACTIVITY DISORDER IS ONE OF THE MAIN
REASONS MARRIAGES END.
BUT A PROPER DIAGNOSIS AND THE RIGHT TREATMENT CAN HELP COUPLES MANAGE ADHD
AND EVEN SAVE THEIR MARRIAGES.
MEDICAL REPORTER KATHY FOWLER HAS THIS STORY.
Kathy Fowler on set: PEOPLE WITH ADHD MIGHT BE INATTENTIVE, HYPERACITVE OR
EXTREMELY IMPULSIVE.
MANY TIMES THEY HAVE TROUBLE FOCUSING, COMPLETING TASKS AND REMEMBERING
INFORMATION... THAT CAN ALL TAKE A TOLL ON RELATIONSHIOPS.
BEVERLY AND PETER ROHMAN HAVE BEEN MARRIED FOR 32 YEARS. IN THAT TIME
THEY'VE LEARNED TO USE ADHD TO ENHANCE THEIR MARRIAGE. BUT IT HASN'T BEEN
EASY.
Beverly Rohman, Wife: "Marriage is difficult and when you couple that with
adhd one spouse and a child who has adhd the stress is enormous."
JUST LOOK IN THE ROHMAN'S CLOSET AND IT DOESN'T TAKE LONG TO TELL WHO
HAS ADHD. PETER'S SIDE IS VERY TIDY. BEVERLY'S VERY MESSY,
DISORGANIZED. LOOK AROUND THE ENTIRE HOUSE YOU'LL SEE BEVERLY'S PILES SHE
SAYS THEY REPRESENT PROCRASTINATION AND PERFECTIONISM.
Kathy: "Did the piles... make you a little crazy at time?"
Peter: "Did that create stress? sure."
ACCORDING TO RECENT STUDIES, PEOPLE WITH ADHD ARE TWICE AS LIKELY TO GET
DIVORCED AND TWICE AS LIKELY TO SEPARATE AS COUPLES WITHOUT AN ADHD PARTNER.
BRIAN TESSPIAN WHO WAS DIAGNOSED WITH ADHD 4 YEARS AGO IS ONE OF THOSE
LIVING STATISTICS. HE AND HIS FIRST WIFE GOT DIVORCED.
Brian, ADHD PATIENT: "I had failed relationships with some really wonderful
people."
DR. PATRICIA QUINN HAS BEEN TREATING PEOPLW WITH ADHD FOR 3 DECADES.
Dr. Patricia Quinn: "Understanding that this is a real disorder and it's
treatable offers immediate help. The couple now feels thety don't have to
give up and walk away from the relationship."
IN HER PRACTICE, MOST PEOPLE WITH ADHD HAVE BEEN MARRIED A FEW TIMES.
Dr. Patricia Quinn: "What we find is that individual with ADHD has a great
deal of difficult with communicating with paying attention following through
on tasks so the partner very often thinks the person is doing it on
purpose."
BRIAN IS NOW REMARRIED. HIS SON HAS ADHD TOO. BOTH ARE ON MEDICATION.
BRIANS WIFE WORKS WITH KIDS WITH ADHD AT A SCHOOL IN BALTIMORE SO SHE HELPS
HIM MANAGE IT.
Brian: "We can joke about it and we have fun... my wife thinks she has a
form of adhd."
AND THE ROHMANS...
Peter Rohman: "Beverly loves to say having ADHD is an asset.. absolutely."
SHE SAYS IT MAKES HER MORE CREATIVE AND THE COUPLE'S YING AND YANG STYLE
HELPED THEM BUILD THEIR NEW HOUSE.
Peter Rohman: "Putting people together with different thinking styles ..
makes things work."
Beverly Rohman: "Learn as much as you can, be encouraging, look for the
positives."
