- LICENSE TO WED
Two emails right in a row on the new movie License to Wed. I'll admit the
negative reviews had turned me off but after reading that Wayne County is
using it for a date night and that Rev Littleton so highly recommends it, I
will try to see it. - diane
> Hi Diane I came home from Denver and my husband and I went to see the
> movie 'License to Wed' staring Robin Williams, Mandy Moore and John
> Krasinski. It's had some negative press but I loved it.
>
> It is not only funny but I believe the movie values the sacredness of
> marriage and it strongly suggest that couples need more than just the desire
> to be married to make their marriage work but that they also need to
> understand the complexity of this intimate union. While Rev. Frank (clearly
> a protestant clergy person) is not perfect and ( Robin Williams as Rev
> Frank) is quite a bit over the top in his attempt in teaching the 10
> commandments to youth and providing pre-marital instruction to the couple.
> He works on issues of communication, family of origin, finances, fair
> fighting, stress, vows and making promises, sex and parenting. The couple
> is not sure that they need this pre-marital work because they are ³in love²
> but the wise pastor insist.
>
> We are told that Rev. Frank is ³everywhere². The film has him going too far¹
> actually bugging the couples conversation. But as a pastor that also insists
> on premarital education, I think this was a metaphor for the fact that many
> pre-marital couples feel that you ³know¹ them very well and are almost able
> predict how they will react or respond to certain stimuli. One couple even
> asked me if I was with them when they had a fight about an issue that we were
> working on. They were not sure how I knew. Thanks to all the Marriage
> education courses at SMARTMARRIAGE we all know certain things about
> relationships.
>
> I came expecting Williams to be
> Irreverent² and he was yet he was funny. I did not feel he was
> making a mockery of what I hold sacred but that he was holding it up and
> asking me as a person of faith to look again and to really know what it is
> that I believe and hold dear. He did this not by preaching but through
> humor.
>
> I think couples who are dating and thinking of marriage should definitely see
> the film and understand how important Pre-marital education is to help couples
> enter into their marriage vitalized and with eyes open ready to make a
> commitment for as long as they both shall live.
>
> Father Frank's pre-marital course was PREP or PAIRS or L.I.N.K.S or PREPARE
> or RE on steroids - it made its point.
>

- NIRE NEWSLETTER CLIPS: MONKEYS & BIOCHEMISTRY
Here are two snips from the FREE Relationship Enhancement newsletter

SPECIAL MOMENTS of Readers Using Relationship Enhancement (RE) Methods:
All of us have had special moments - some funny, some touching, some
frightening, some especially rewarding, some sweet, some surprising, etc.
Let¹s share. I¹ll start with funny.
One day I had an older couple who came in for marital counseling. RE
revealed that the wife¹s problem was that her husband "was always watching
TV" and she wasn¹t getting attention when she needed it. The husband said
that he had no way of knowing when she needed attention.
I remembered Bernie teaching us to put a funny-looking thing in the room
where the problem usually happened as a reminder to make the needed change
- like a ceramic alligator on the dining room table. Inspired by this
image, I said to the wife, "What is a funny word that you can say to your
husband when you need attention? She said "MONKEY! The couple agreed to use
this as their solution.
They returned for their next appointment and I asked them how they did
using "monkey."
The husband smiled and said, "It worked fine.....and I¹m even using it on
her! They seemed so pleased with the result that, after that appointment, I
never saw them again.

MONTHLY GUERNEY QUOTES:
We also have little doubt that individual differences in genetics and
biochemistry will be found to play some sort of role in the development of
psychological life-styles of people in general. It is our view, however,
that genetic and biochemical forces are not the major determining factors
in the problems of the overwhelming majority of people who see themselves,
or are seen by others, as requiring the services of mental health
professionals.
Always for this larger group, and at pre-and post-crisis points for the
much smaller, truly ill group, the role of interpersonal relations is
central to the problem and to the solution. Such a conclusion seems
inescapable when we consider that relationships with other people are at
the heart of everything we do and are virtually inseparable from all the
stresses and anxieties of life.
