How to Improve Your Marriage Without Talking About It
Finding Love Beyond Words
by Patricia Love and Steven Stosny (Broadway, $23.95)
Therapists Patricia Love and Steven Stosny think that talking about your
relationship can actually drive you apart. Instead, couples need to be
sensitive to "core vulnerabilities"--a woman's fears of being alone, for
example, or a man's shame at being a poor provider)--to achieve deep
connections.
1. Hubby not talking much? Your guy may not be chatting, but your mere
presence is extremely comforting to him.
2. Guys find strength in routine, whether it's eating the same cereal each
morning or sitting in a favorite chair. When you support his routine, he
feels loved by you.
3. Men: Simple, affectionate gestures make your spouse feel connected to
you. Kiss her goodbye each morning before leaving, for example.
4. Other ways to make your wife feel more connected: Plan activities each
week that you enjoy together outside the home, and do stuff together inside
the home, too, like cooking dinner or having coffee.
5. Hug your partner (full-body embrace!) six times a day for six seconds. A
hugless relationship builds resentment.

- MSNBC ON MARRIAGE?
> Diane, Did you or anyone on the listserv see the stories on Marriage and
> Divorce on MSNBC on Sunday? I don't know if it was a rerun or not, but it was
> terrific. It spoke about 4 marriages--one white gay couple with two adopted
> black children, one couple on their 3rd marriage (she is the editor of "More"
> magazine), one couple getting divorced after a 20-year marriage, and a working
> couple with four children married several years who try to "balance"
> everything. The stories were narrated by a gentleman who was divorced himself
> and who moved to NY--far away from his two children in CA. I am not sure I
> saw the show from the beginning because I turned it on by chance; however, it
> was at least 2 hours long and very well done. I'd like to know if and when it
> may be shown again.

> Beverly Stern
I didn't see it. Does anyone have info? If you see show promos for shows
like this in advance, please let me know so I can alert the list. - diane

- VALENTINE'S DAY IN CHINA
Interesting to see that Valentine's Day casts its spell around the world. On
Monday, I had an inquiry from a Chinese delegation that plans to come to
Denver. - diane
> Marriage offices to be busy today

> Officials with the Shanghai Marriage Management Division said that they will
> start work at least 30 minutes earlier than usual and extend service hours
> until the last waiting couple has finished registration today.
>
> The division has also set aside special waiting rooms, as well as arranging
> extra workers to help people with document verification during their waiting

> As the Western holiday has grown in popularity in China, it has become a
> popular day to tie the knot in recent years.
>
> Marriage administration officials in Pudong, the largest district in the city,
> saw more than 300 couples register on February 14 last year. On an average
> day, fewer than 100 couples register to marry at the office.
>
> Zhou noted that spots to register today were fully booked online by the end of
