Based on Willard Harley's keynote in Denver 2007, many of you have written
asking/hoping he'll do a training institute in San Francisco.  He instead
has decided to present three workshops. He says it's all anyone will need.

The three workshops will be based on his home study courses for couples.
I just called him about this and he has agreed to extend an offer I saw on
his own Marriage Builders newslist to Smart Marriages list subscribers -

This is so you can check out the model in advance of the SF workshops, or,
if you're not coming to SF, so you can start using the program in your own
marriage.

The three workshops in San Francisco will be a great introduction to
teaching the model OR, even if you don't, will be a great window into how
Harley is tackling the core challenge in our field - how not only to lead
couples to water and get them to drink, but to KEEP them drinking. In this
case DRINKING (from the fountain of marriage education wisdom) is a good
thing.  

Harley is determined and doesn't shrink from the challenge - which is so
easy to ignore. He says if we don't track couple outcome "over the long run"
none of what we do has any meaning. He scoffs at valuations taken at the end
of classes (the afterglow effect) and also scoffs at "tracking just six
months out". He says that's simply not long enough, that we need to track
couples for life. I think he's serious. Reminds me of my MFT teacher, Murray
Bowen. When you'd tell him you thought you'd had a good marital therapy
session he'd say, "Show me the grandkids. That's when we'll know if you've
been successful." Yep.

Harley's first workshop in SF introduce his learn-at-home programs: His
Needs, Her Needs and Love Busters.  Which is why I suggest you take
advantage of the offer and check them out  in advance. It's not required
that you do this to take the workshop, but it will help him do the most with
the 90 mins if most of you have reviewed the programs in advance.  As the
workshop description puts it: "Between these two courses, almost every
problem faced in marriage is addressed with effective plans to overcome
them."  

The second workshop will familiarize attendees with his long-range
"internet-based accountability program".  He's created a system to track
couples' progress over the long run. As he says, it's one thing to get
couples started on a course of improvement and recovery, another to keep
them motivated.  That is our challenge.

His third workshop will describe exciting applications of the programs with
various populations: how they've been modified and the results in using them
in Mexico and with black populations in the United States, a project in
Israel, etc. His point is to show that couples issues are universal and that
long range motivation is an issue wherever you teach ­ and how to do it.
