- HISPANIC AND CAUCASIAN COUPLES HAVE SIMILAR "COUPLES TYPES" on ENRICH:
 
A study just completed by David Olson and Jeffery Garrett using the ENRICH
Couple Inventory found almost identical percentages in the five couple types
with Hispanic and Caucasian marriages.
 
Although it is often assumed that different ethnic groups will have
different patterns of marriage, this study found considerable similarity in
couple types (based on ENRICH scores) across four ethic combinations of
married couples (both Hispanic, both Caucasian, Hispanic Male/Caucasian
Female and Hispanic Female/Caucasian Male). Sample size for each group was
about 400-500 married couples.
 
A very similar percentage of married couples from these four ethic
combinations fell into the five ENRICH couples types: VITALIZED (20-25%),
HARMONIOUS(5-10%), TRADITIONAL (10-15%), CONFLICTED (20-25%)and
DEVITALIZED (28-35%).
 
Similar results were previously found when African American couples were
compared with Caucasian couples on the five ENRICH Couple types. This
earlier study was done by Dr. Bill Allen and Dr. David Olson.
 
In summary, these two studies support the value and validity of the five
couple types based on ENRICH for use with Hispanic, African American and
Caucasian marriages.  This is an important finding since it confirms that
marriages across ethnic groups are more similar than different.
