- NEW INSTITUTES FOR 2007
I know it's that time of year when you're expecting me to announce the full
Institute roster. I'm close, but still have a few descriptions to edit.
But to whet your appetites, here are some Institutes we're adding in '07. I
know most of you realize that there are 36 institutes each year, 18 pre and
18 post, and want to assure you that classics like PREP, Divorce Busting,
Prepare/Enrich, IMAGO, Family Wellness, etc etc etc will all be back. Each
person can take only two Institute trainings - one pre conference and one
post conference. So, plan to bring your community marriage co-conspirators
with you - folks that can fan out and cover all the bases. - diane

- MEN AND MARRIAGE: FREE DOWNLOAD
Hi Diane,
I was invited to co-write a chapter called "Men, Marriage and Divorce" in
the APA Press book "The Textbook of Men's Mental Health" that is now
available in PDF format.

http://www.fathersandfamilies.org/NEWS/2006_MMH_book_chapter12_FINAL.pdf?PHP
SESSID=32895b0a9224a3250a7ebe82bb6dc42a

I want to warn readers that the book editors took some liberties, including
substituting the word "resolve issues" for "repair" in the third bullet on
page 289, which, unfortunately, renders the point inaccurate. As Gottman has
pointed out, happily married couples don't resolve "big ticket" items the
majority of the time. But they definitey DO repair!

Callista Nance
Senior VP of Publicity

- STEPFAMILY STUDY: FREE 25 PAGE PDF "TOOLS" IF YOU TAKE THE SURVEY

Diane,
The Stepfamily Foundation of Alberta has launched a research study intended
to generate information about stepparenting styles. We would be grateful if
you would invite your listserv to participate.
http://www.stepfamily.ca/stepparent_survey_overview.htm
Dr. Bill Nodrick
info at stepfamily.ca

It's always a good idea to help stepfamilies in any way we can. Stepfamily
members who take the survey are rewarded with a free 25 page pdf/booklet
"Tools to Master 4 Essential Stepfamily Tasks" which is reason enough to
forward the survey url to any stepcouples you care about. Or, if you
qualify as a stepfamily member, take the survey yourself and use the booklet
in your Community Healthy Marriage work. I've snipped a piece of advice
(below) as an example of what's contained in the booklet. - diane

> Your partner will react to an act of kindness directed toward their child as
> if you had extended two acts of kindness directly towards them (your partner).
> The same applies for an unkind act, but your partner is likely to react as if
> you had acted unkindly towards them (your partner) five times.

- PICK A PARTNER AND MARRIAGE LINKS IN ASIA

I emailed John Van Epp to find out how his recent trip to Singapore went.
I'm sharing his reply to remind us all of the great interest in and need for
our programs all around the world. I had emails this week from Croatia and
Egypt - both looking to organize marriage education efforts in their
countries. And, to remind you we had attendees in Atlanta from 26 countries.

To help you make sense of Van Epp's reply, the book to which he refers is
his recently released "How to Avoid Marrying a Jerk". PICK is his "How to
Avoid Marrying a Jerk" program by a less sassy name: PICK (Premarital
Interpersonal Choices & Knowledge). And, LINKS is his new Marriage LINKS
Program (Lasting Intimacy through Nurturing, Knowledge and Skills). He'll
train instructors in both programs at the Denver Smart Marriages Conference.
And, MP Wylie, who also presented in Singapore will also present her Journey
to Love for Singles program at the Denver Smart Marriages Conference.
- Diane

> Diane,
> Thanks for asking. Singapore went great! I did the PICK training for
> professors, social workers and matchmakers (quite the growing industry in
> Asia). The next day I presented a 2-hour seminar for the public followed by a
> book signing which were very well received. A participant from mainland China
> asked about getting the publication rights to the book for translation into
> Chinese. South Korea already purchased the rights to translate and publish the
> book in Korean. More to come on this and on the Spanish translation of the
> PICK and LINKS programs.
>
> An organization that works with the Singapore Ministry of Community
> Development wants to set up a distribution center for production of my PICK
> and LINKS materials. And, they've invited me back in March for a Marriage
> Enrichment Conference (where I would present LINKS and train instructors).
>
> I think you know that MP Wylie was also invited and also presented a 2 hr
> session on her Journey to Love for Singles program.
