- MARRIAGE DONE RIGHT

I just received this press release (below) from Jim Sheridan. They were the
last to hear about their grant and are celebrating like crazy. The press
release doesn't mention Jim, but it does mention Lenawee County and anyone
on this list knows that Lenawee is code for all the persistent and creative
work Jim has done to stengthen marriage since 1997. We are thrilled about
this one. Stop by Jim's exhibit in Denver or attend his training institute
and help him celebrate. Jim has presented several keynotes and workshops at
Smart Marriages and due to popular insistence is presenting a full day
training institute on his model. - diane

- $1.1 MILLION FEDERAL GRANT AWARDED IN MICHIGAN

$1.1 Million Federal Grant Awarded to Strengthen Marriages

JACKSON, Michigan, (December 4, 2006) The Federal Health & Human Services
Administration has awarded a $1.1 million grant to the Michigan Healthy
Marriage Coalition, a regional collaboration that includes Jackson, Wayne
and Lenawee Counties. The United Way of Jackson County, Lenawee County¹s
Marriages That Work and the Marriage Resource Center of Wayne County have
partnered to regionally address strengthening marriages. The funding is for
the first year of a five-year grant and will fund new and continuing
marriage and family strengthening services for low-income people.

This Michigan Healthy Marriage Coalition Demonstration Project will provide
public awareness, relationship skill building, and pre-marital and marriage
enhancement services to youth, low-income couples and incarcerated
individuals in Southeast Michigan. The Project will initially target the
counties of Jackson, Wayne, and Lenawee and may expand to include additional
counties in Southeast Michigan in subsequent years.

In Jackson County, this federal grant will complement Healthy Marriage
activities already being carried out by the United Way of Jackson County¹s
Full Circle Healthy Marriage Initiative. The Full Circle Healthy Marriage
Initiative is a community collaborative focused on education, preparation,
and enrichment programs in support of marriage.

Marriages That Work, of Lenawee County, has developed a working partnership
with the Michigan Department of Corrections to teach relationship skills as
part of the DOC¹s prisoner reentry program. Prisoners who move into healthy
relationships have a very low recidivism rate. Marriage That Work will also
be working with the Community Action Agency and a number of faith based
organizations.

In Wayne County, this federal grant will complement Healthy Marriage
activities already being carried out by the Marriage Resource Center of
Wayne County. The MRC-WC already provides marriage strengthening resources
through its¹ website--the first in Michigan to provide ³one-stop shopping²
for couples at every stage of marriage.

Support for the Michigan grant was provided by Senator Carl Levin and
members of the Michigan congressional delegation, and Michigan Supreme Court
Justice Maura Corrigan.
