- MARRIAGE EDUCATION FOR NEWLYWED WOMEN
> Hi Diane, My husband Tim and I attended the Smart Marriages Conference in

Funny you should ask. I was just thinking about planning an evening group
for "newlyweds" at the Denver conference. Someone asked for one on their
conf evaluation form: "You have a group for singles, why don't you do
something for newlyweds?" I was thinking of asking Barry McCarthy who got
rave reviews for his workshop and his book "Getting it Right the First Time"
to host this event - go over the tasks for the first years of marriage with
them. He also has a book for "Getting It Right This Time" - so many
newlyweds are in remarriages.
You can check him out on the recording of his workshop - order at

I'm also thinking that even though the the premarital and marital programs
are written for working with couples, they could be easily adapted. They
lay out the tasks and skills and you just tweak to teach to women. Some that
spring to mind would be Hendrix's "Imago Connects"; Petty's "Married and
Loving It!"; Olson's Prepare/Enrich Mentor Package, etc. (All also
available as recordings from the conference.)
Actually, I just remembered that The Basic Training for Couples folks, Nisa
Muhammad and Rosario Slack, will be introducing new versions for men and
women - Basic Marriage Training for Women - know these will be terrific but
from listening to the recording of their session, sounds like it would be
easy, in meantime, to adapt the curriculum to your use with a woman's group.
Or, maybe you should just include the men and use "10 Great Dates" - couples
can have such a hard time keeping up the date routine/romance AFTER they get
married.
I'll bet there are some already adapted ready to go and I'm just not
thinking of them because it's that time of the afternoon .....I'll put this
out to the list and ask folks what they are using and bet we'll be reminded
of the perfect package. - diane

I had to click just to hear "Old Love" again. That's the song that waltzed
us into the ballroom before each of the keynote sessions - that became our
"10th Anniversary" theme song. Click to hear just a snippet, and there is a
link to order the CD:
