- "YOU ARE A MIRACLE" - HEDY SCHLEIFER

Several of you have inquired about information about Hedy Schleifer. Either
you saw her incredible "Magic of Connection" opening keynote in Atlanta or
you heard about her from people who came back to your office calling
everyone a miracle. Apparently on the recording of the session I give the
wrong address for her website. It's http://www.hedyyumi.org (not .com as I
said).

For those of you that missed the keynote, it was AMAZING, high energy,
moving, inspiring and the perfect way to kick-off our 10th anniversary
conference. You can order the recording of the keynote and also of her very
highly rated 2 hour workshop. You'll get an intro to Hedy who is a workshop
presenter and motivational speaker with 30 years experience. Hedy and Yumi
travel the world presenting their "Adventure in Intimacy" workshops.
Their model combines Imago Relationship Theory, the philosophy of Martin
Buber, Appreciative Inquiry, and re-evaluation co-counseling. If you want
to find an upcoming training or invite them to speak at your next event,
visit their website or call 305-604-0010

ONE secret of a happy marriage is... depression.

Research claims a spouse who starts off married life down in the dumps is
more likely to experience wedded bliss than one already happy.

The study of 3,000 people, at Ohio State University in the US, also found
depressed people normally end up with fewer problems in their marriages than
others.

Researcher Adrianne Frech said: "We thought they would benefit less from
marriage as depression in one spouse can strain a relationship. We found the
opposite."

Colleague Kristi Williams said getting married made depressed people
particularly happy.

She added: "They may just be specially in need of the intimacy and social
support marriage gives."

- MARRIAGE FOUND TO HELP WITH DEPRESSION

(AHN) - An Ohio University study showed that getting married can help cheer
up people with depression.

After studying more than 3,000 people a team of students and professors
found that marriage enhances mental health but noticed an extreme change in
those who were depressed before their first marriage.

PhD Sociology Student Adrianne Frech said the team actually expected to find
opposite results. In fact, they thought one spouse's depression would cause
problems in the marriage.

"Just mattering to someone can alleviate symptoms of depression," Frech
said.

Assistant Professor of sociology Kristi Williams said "Depressed people may
be just especially in need of the intimacy, the emotional closeness and the
social support that marriage can provide. If you start out happy you don't
have to go as far."

not at all depressing, according to a new study by researchers at Ohio
University. In fact their study says that marriage enhances mental health
particularly if a person is already feeling depressed.

Previous studies have documented marriage as helping people with general
well being. This study looked at whether marriage helps people who are
depressed. ³Our findings question the common assumption that marriage is
always a good choice for all individuals,² said co-author Adrianne Frech, a
doctoral student in sociology at Ohio State University.

The study examined data from the National Survey of Families and Households,
which had interviewed some Americans in 1987-88 and then again in 1992-94.
For the study sample, the researchers used the data of 3,066 people who were
unmarried at the time the first interview was conducted. The researchers
measured depression by asking some 12 questions that included the number of
days in the past week that the participants felt ³felt like they could not
shake off the blues,² ³slept restlessly,² or ³felt lonely.²

Researchers found that depressed people benefited most from marriage. ³We
actually found the opposite of what we expected,² Frech said. ³We thought
depressed people would be less likely to benefit from marriage because the
depression of one spouse can put a strain on the marriage and undermine
marital quality.² The mental health of the depressed people was indeed
enhanced after marriage more than non-depressed people. The researchers did
not find any gender differences in this regard.

³Marriage may give depressed people a greater sense that they matter to
someone, while people who weren't depressed prior to marriage may have
always thought that way," said co-author Kristi Williams, assistant
professor of sociology at Ohio University. The findings were presented at
the annual meeting of the American Sociological Association on August 13.
