- OPRAH REPEATING STOSNY: TOMORROW MARCH 16
The Oprah show is repeating the first broadcast in the 3-part series on "The
best kept secret in America: Emotional Abuse" TOMORROW, March 16. I know so
many of you were bummed to have missed it when it originally broadcast on
Oct 5. It features Chris, a CompassionPower Boot Camp graduate describing
the way he was before treatment and showing his transformation. This show,
the first of Stosny's three appearances on Oprah this fall, received more
email than any other show Oprah. I trust she'll also repeat the next two
shows in the series and I'll try to alert you to the schedule. The final
show features 30 mins of a Stosny Boot Camp.
You can take the Stosny/Compassion Program 2-day training Institute June 27
& 28, in Dallas. Become a qualified Compassion Program instructor -- or
learn the skills for your own life/relationships. For info and to register,
visit: http://www.smartmarriages.com/institutes.html
Register asap, this one will fill up.

- CHILD SUPPORT DEMONSTRATIONS APPROVED IN THREE MORE STATES!!
Funds help children, support healthy marriage and parental relationships
Tuesday, March 15, 2005
ACF
HHS' Assistant Secretary for Children and Families Dr. Wade F. Horn today
announced $2,958,184 in federal funding to support demonstration projects in
Georgia, Kentucky and Texas to promote improvements in child support
enforcement efforts.
"These projects will help improve the well-being of children, promote
paternity establishment and help parents provide increased financial and
emotional support for their children," Dr. Horn said. "With today's
announcement, we now have nine child support enforcement projects aimed at
developing and testing new strategies in communities across the nation to
support healthy marriages and parental relationships."
The grants are awarded under the authority of Section 1115 of the Social
Security Act and require that each project be designed to improve the
financial well-being of children or otherwise improve the operation of the
child support enforcement program. Section 1115 authorizes states to conduct
experimental, pilot or demonstration projects likely to assist in promoting
the objectives of the Social Security Act.
The goals of the demonstration projects include improving the establishment
of paternity and increasing financial support for children as well as
improving fathers' relationships with both their children and the mothers of
their children. The projects also include efforts to improve couple
relationships and reduce the potential for domestic violence. The projects
are required to screen participants for domestic violence and refer
appropriate individuals for services.
Kentucky will receive $1 million in federal funding. Texas will receive
$998,184 and Georgia will be awarded $960,000. HHS' Administration for
Children and Families will conduct a comprehensive evaluation to assess how
the projects were implemented and their effects on families, children and
the child support program.
The projects will last between two and five years and will be supplemented
by private funding. The grants represent additional funding to the states
and will not affect the amount of federal funds available to administer
child support programs.

- NEW TANF DRAFT BILL APPROVED BY SENATE FINANCE COMMITTEE
> The Senate Finance Committee approved its draft bill to rewrite the 1996 law
> March 9. That measure, sponsored by Finance Chairman Charles E. Grassley,
> R-Iowa, would increase child care subsidies by $6 billion over the next five
> years. It also would require adult recipients to work 34 hours per week.
>
> The Senate is expected to take up the legislation on the floor within months.
What this report doesn't mention, is that this is the draft that includes
marriage strengthening money - it has cleared the Senate Finance Committee.
Get ready. Register for a full-day Grant Writing workshop at the Smart
Marriages Conference.

- LIVED LOVE
Diane,
Below is a brief quote from a recent book review.
"For all the talk of love, it often seems that what Winterson is really
talking about is desire - the longing, the pursuit, the potent combination
of erotic encounter and absence, all of which she is very good at evoking.
What we DON'T tend to get in her novels are the messy complications of a
relationship stretched and tested by daily proximity over time - lived
love." - Catherine Bush, in the Toronto Globe & Mail, Dec 18, 2004, in a
review of Lighthousekeeping by Jeanette Winterson

- CME? - MEDICAL CONTINUING EDUCATION CREDITS
> Hi Diane, I have (I hope) a simple questions. Do you know how I can get
CEU's
> for the conference either for the Bringing Baby home or the Becoming Parents
> Program (the one that uses PREP). I am a Pediatric Nurse Practitioner and
> would really like to get CME's for the course if possible.
> Kathy Schleier
> Whitfield/Murray Marriage Initiative
Hi Kathy,
We don't have CME approval but we do have ALL the mental health approvals.
I suggest you submit a Certificate of Attendance to your board and request
approval. This has worked in the past for nurses. The certificate will show
that the Smart Marriages conference (and institutes) ARE approved by the
APA, ASWB and NBCC national boards plus all the individual state boards such
as the CA Board of Behavioral Science, PA SW board, OH, FL and IL Mental
Health Boards, etc. etc. Pretty compelling and convincing for Nurse
Practitioner boards. Though I must caution you that there are no
guarantees, it's up to your board.
By the way, neither the Bringing Baby Home or Becoming Parents folks offer
CME's -- so this isn't a problem limited to Smart Marriages. You would
likely face the same dilemma wherever you take these trainings. You might
also let your board know that the Becoming Parents Program was created by
Pam Jordan who is a nurse and a PhD.
Would any of the nurses who have been successful at this, please share the
process?
Diane
