- A CONFERENCE STORY
As the summer approaches, I know that many people on your list serve still
haven't decided whether or not to come to the Smart Marriages conference in
Dallas this June. I hope my story will help sway the opinion of some people
who are still on the fence.
My first Smart Marriage conference was in Orlando in 2001. I volunteered to
host a lunch table for people interested in husbands issues. Frank Pittman
introduced me at his seminar with the words: "I don't really know who this
guy is..." but he gave me a chance to announce my lunch table. Well,
eventually Frank did get to know who I am, and I got to exchange ideas with
him and dozens of people over the next three conferences.
In the years following that conference, I had been trying, unsuccessfully,
to publish my book, "The Secrets of Happily Married Men." Many major book
houses had reviewed it; each concluded that since "Men don't read these
books," it shouldn't be published. By the summer of 2004, I was starting to
get discouraged. I had let go of my agent a few weeks before, and was
starting to believe that maybe the publishing houses were right.
So, I wasn't expecting much in the way of opportunities when Rozario Slack
and I did our first "Corralling the Stallion" presentation in Dallas last
year. I started the seminar, as I do all my talks, with a few riffs on my
harmonica. As I began the presentation, I spoke to the audience about the
importance of men in marriage (after all, by my estimations, they make up
exactly half of all married couples). I also discussed my negative
experiences with publishing houses, to the audience's groans of disbelief.
After Rozario and I completed our presentation, a gentleman approached me
and asked, pointedly, "Were you serious about wanting to publish your book?"
Was I serious! Does a bear -- oh, never mind. Ends up this man was Alan
Rinzler, the executive editor of Jossey-Bass Publishing (a division of John
Wiley and Sons) -- the ones who publish "Fighting for Your Marriage," and
Scott Stanley's new book, "The Power of Commitment." Turns out, Alan loved
my harmonica playing! He also loved the idea of a book for men about
marriage. We met for lunch in the hotel lobby right after the talk, and
paved the way for a deal.
After that, things happened in a whirlwind. I spent the next six months
working with a co-author, and am just now completing the final edits before
it goes into book form. That's right, a real book! As an advocate for men,
and an educator on how men can make marriages better, the upcoming
publication (in January!) of my book is a dream come true.
Diane, I wanted to share this story with you because I imagine there are
many people in the Smart Marriages mailing list who dream of helping others.
Whether it's publishing a book, being interviewed for an article in some
mainline magazine, getting a government grant or starting marriage education
classes in your community, my experience has shown me that the Smart
Marriage conference is a place where dreams can come true.
