SINGLES AT SMART MARRIAGES:

Many who attend the Smart Marriages conference are single. As in
"romantically unattached".

We've had many requests that we do something so they can meet - to network
and discuss singles education programs, but, also, as several people have
put it, to meet a possible mate - "I'd love to date someone who understands
the concepts of a Smart Marriage!"

We've come up with several ideas.

1) We'll invite singles to put a sticker on their conference badge so
singles can recognize each other. Get your sticker at the conference
registration desk. 2) We'll designate interest tables at the Friday and
Saturday lunches and at the banquet so that attendees who would like to
discuss professional and social issues for singles can sit together.
3) We've added a Singles Roundtable on Sat night at 8:30pm where singles can
meet and also discuss what we might do at future conferences to get
singles/matchmaker/inventories/dating programs on the conference map. -

DAVID OLSON KEYNOTER AT CHINA CONFERENCE ON MARRIAGE

THE GOOD NEWS: China is holding its first national conference on Marital and
Family Strengths in Shanghai this June.

THE BAD NEWS: David Olson, founder of PREPARE/ENRICH will present a keynote
at the conference. Which means he won't be presenting for us at Smart
Marriages.

However, we'll manage and our sacrifice is for a good cause. This will be
the very first time that we'll hold a Smart Marriages conference without
David Olson presenting. The day-long PREPARE/ENRICH training institute
(Monday, July 15) will be presented by two highly qualified PREPARE/ENRICH
instructors ‹ Drs. David Fournier and Bill Allen. David Fournier is, in
fact, one of the original co-developers of PREPARE/ENRICH and Bill Allen did
his dissertation using ENRICH with African American couples.

REQUEST FOR HELP:

Diane, Univ of Denver colleagues, others,

Input needed in the next 2 days, please! From/about PREP-based programs,
especially those focusing on the most needy groups in cities, includes large
proportion of black and Hispanic populations.

The emerging marriage and family effort I am helping to launch in Berks
County, PA (Reading) has a possibility of a sizeable grant through the state
(Pennsylvania Commission on Crime and Delinquency, TANF funds dedicated to
PA Weed and Seed program) based on the new directives to focus on the areas
of:
reducing out of wedlock pregnancies (prevent and discourage)
       maintaining two-parent families

The only groups eligible for this grant are ones who employ reseach-based
programs which have been pre-approved and which appear in the "Communities
That Care 'Promising Approaches' " booklet. Since PREP is a major piece of
what we will employ we may qualify.

As is often the case with these grants, we only just found out about it 4
days ago, have a preliminary meeting before the end of the week and the
grant
is due in under 3 weeks !!

We would like to receive input from those of you whose have created PREP as
well as those of you who have been employing PREP in community-wide
programs.
We already understand why the content/approach is so effective. Our need
is
to learn about the ways it is offered and organized and followed up over
time, etc..

1. What do your programs look like?

2. What has worked well? Why?

3. What would you recommend NOT doing?

4. What have you offered to teens? How? How have you cooperated with
schools?
where are the best places to start, and then branch out?

5. What recommendations on keeping records and stats on our work?(We are
not
trained sociologists)

6. What outcomes should we be tracking? How?

7. Do any of you have grants you have already done with PREP as the
centerpiece? Would you be willing to share a copy with us?

We look forward to hearing from you.
