subject: DEADLINES - Tapping federal *marriage* funding - Tapes - 7/02
from: Smart Marriages
Many of you have asked for information about sources of funding for marriage
support activities. As you know, the $300 million marriage-strengthening
legislation is stalled in the US Senate. Thus the need to focus on
alternative funding sources.
Go to the smartmarriages.com web site and click on Marriage Reports for the
info on current federal funding streams and DEADLINES.
At the Smart Marriages conference, leaders from the Administration for
Children and Families at the Department of Health and Human Services
(ACF/HHS) presented on the initiative and on alternative funding streams. I
encourage anyone interested, to purchase the tapes of the sessions. The
tapes make clear that the feds are interested in collaborative,
community-based efforts that provide services for at-risk populations. This
will also be the federal interest if and when congress appropriates
significant money for marriage-strengthening activities. If you don't have
time to meet the current deadlines, you should get the tapes and begin to
work on developing community-wide marriage initiatives for future
applications.
The crucial tapes are Wade Horn's keynote #752-002 "Marriage Matters"
and Chris Gersten's session #752-320 "The President's Marriage Initiative".
Horn lays out the rationale for govt involvement in marriage-strengthening
activities - everyone who is working at strengthening marriage in the
community needs to memorize this one. He describes the need for marriage
strengthening programs in a fashion that almost everyone can support.
Understanding his approach will help you make new allies and build capacity
for marriage support in your communities.
In a follow-up session #320, Gersten, Horn's principle deputy, presents
strategies for connecting to Regional ACF offices across the country;
describes available money that allows for marriage strengthening
initiatives; provides info on research, application deadlines - one DEADLINE
is August 6 and another is Aug 13th; but most important describes the kinds
of capacity-building, community efforts that the govt wants to encourage.
Order the tapes at 800-241-7785 or FAX: 770-447-0543. While your at it, I
suggest that if you are interested in organizing at the community level, you
get the complete "Movers and Shakers - Community" series.
