BECOMING PARENTS RESEARCH MILLIONS!!:
This is wonderful! Realize that you can become a trained and qualified
instructor in the Becoming Parents Program at the Smart Marriages conference
in a post-conference training institute. Be ready to offer this program in
your community - it's one of the most obvious and most effective ways to
strengthen marriages. Note that the training includes copies of both the
Becoming Parents Leader's Manual and the Couple's Manual. And, you will not
only learn the BPP content and how to deliver it, including how to train
others to assist you, but also strategies for marketing and pricing the
program.
However, a prerequisite of the training is to read the book,
Becoming Parents: How to Strengthen Your Marriage As Your Family Grows by
Pam Jordan, Scott Stanley and Howard Markman BEFORE the institute training.

Diane-
I am thrilled to announce that I have received a 5 year, $2.5 million
grant from the National Institute of Nursing Research of the National
Insitutes of Health to conduct a randomized, controlled clinical trial of
the Becoming Parents Program. We will be evaluating the efficacy of the
Becoming Parents Program. 500 married couples expecting the birth of a
first child will be recruited into the study: 250 couples into the
intervention group and 250 into the control group.
Couples in the intervention group will attend 27 hours of classes of the
Becoming Parents Program (21 hours during pregnancy and a 3 hour 'booster
session' when their baby is 6-8 weeks old and another 3 hour 'booster
session' when their baby is 6 months old). Class content includes the
internationally renown PREP Program which teaches couple skills; self care
skills (including managing anger, stress, fatigue, creating a support
network, negotiating work and family responsibilities); an 'owner's manual'
for the baby (infant behavior, infant state, state modulation, infant cues,
feeding is more than eating); and the many ways becoming parents impacts
people's lives. Couples in our pilot study adamantly stated that these
classes should be required for ALL couples becoming parents. Couples in the
control group will just complete the study measures.
We will be evaluating marital satisfaction, marital stability, stress,
depression, couple interaction, parent-infant interaction, health
practices and health risk behaviors, and contacts with health care
providers. Data will be gathered during pregnancy, when couples register
for study participation, at 6 months postbirth, and at 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5
years postbirth. Subjects receive remuneration for their completion of the
study measures.
We have begun subject recruitment and will begin the intervention classes
in June and anticipate that the findings from the study will be quite
informative!
