subject: Gottman/Covey/Casablanca Effect - 9/26/01

from: Smart Marriages

THE CASABLANCA EFFECT:
Have the events of Sept 11 increased your awareness of the importance of
your relationship - have you put off filing for divorce, decided to get
married, signed up for a marriage education course, given a course as a
gift, etc? If so, I'd love to hear from you and share these stories - share
the glow. Please indicate if you'd be willing to have your name attached or
if you wish to remain anonymous. Let me know if you would be willing to
talk to a reporter. Also send examples of any indicators of renewed
interest in strengthening marriages in your community, on your base, in your
congregation, by your legislators, etc.

Maggie Gallagher has dubbed this the Casablanca Effect - i. e. "realizing
the problems of two little people don't amount to a hill of beans in this
world....." Isn't that wonderful. - diane

OR MAYBE THEY COULD VOLUNTEER TO WORK AS MARRIAGE MENTORS......many of you
have expressed concerns about the story about the military couples rushing
to get married. Mentors/marriage educator volunteers could help. - diane

Here's an idea sent in by a reader:

CONCEPT: Americans Teaching Americans - Helping our children learn

PROBLEM # 1: Children in our schools need attention, caring, and
tutoring. Teachers are over-worked and over-extended.

PROBLEM # 2: Tens of thousands of workers have been laid off from the
airline and other industries - these people are capable, dependable, and
educated.

Wouldn't it be wonderful if these capable people, now unemployed, would sign
up at a school in their community for a regular time (daily or weekly) to be
assigned to a classroom, to a specific student, or to tutor a specific
subject.

The next 6 to 7 months of public school volunteer assistance -- sharing your
time with a child -- will definitely benefit children, the teachers and
schools, will enrich the life of the volunteer, and will help our country
move toward a better future.
