Join NCFR's February "Hot Topics"
Teleconference: "What is the Role of Government in Today's Marriage
Debates?" Speaker: Theodora Ooms

In the emerging debates on welfare reform reauthorization and legislation to
promote responsible fatherhood, marriage is taking on increasing importance.
Ooms will discuss who is promoting marriage and why, what are the
appropriate roles of the federal, state and local government, and why this
is such a controversial and sensitive issue.

Theodora Ooms, M.S.W., is a senior policy analyst at the Center for Law and
Social Policy where she directs the Couples and Marriage Policy Resource
Center with a special focus on low-income populations.

As part of her work at CLASP, Ooms provides consultation and technical
assistance to the Greater Grand Rapids Community Marriage Policy and two
community-based organizations in Baltimore to sponsor community dialogues on
couples and marriage in low income communities. In addition she is an
independent senior consultant to Governor Keating's comprehensive statewide

Here is my inside track for the Kennedy Center Space launch - nice to
have a marriage educator who works *inside* the base! *Our* launch
- originally scheduled for June 21 that I told you had been rescheduled
for June 28th has now been moved back to "no earlier than July 22".
But this may mean that one of the launches scheduled earlier in
the year will move back far enough to end up back on our window of
June 19 - 26. Also, note the articles Melodie mentions. - diane

Hello, Diane,
They internally rebaselined the launch date today for the June 28th launch
to NET (no earlier than) July 22. The early June one hasn't changed since
last week.

Also, wanted to let you know that I saw you and Smart Marriages mentioned in
Feb. Redbook AND there's a terrific article that mentions SmartMarriages in
the premier Issue of AARPs new mag for us boomers called "My Generation."
The article was called "Secrets of the Marriage Doctors". Good stuff!

Thanks for keeping us out there!
Take care,
Melodie

>Diane,
>Do you know if there will be anything in the Smart Marriages conference that
>will relate to domestic violence?
>Thanks. Really appreciate all your information on marriage and the family
>and related issues.
>Walt and Valerie Acuff
>Skills for Living
>United Kingdom

Yes, we have a two-day training in the most acclaimed
program for treating domestic violence - Compassion Workshops, by Steve
Stosny - Mon & Tues. The training certifies you to teach the course
which is also applicable to work with adolescents, gangs, parenting,
road rage, business, military, etc.

905 Two Days - Monday & Tuesday
Compassion Workshops
Steven Stosny, PhD
Learn to provide intensive change for spouse and child abusers by
creating moral agency in the abuser. Engage abusers in the first
session to prevent all forms of retribution against victims; motivate
by teaching the rewards (self-enhancement and self-empowerment);
and illustrate the power of internally regulating one¹s own abusive
impulses. Evaluation and research training.

PLEASE go to the web site - click on institutes
http://www.smartmarriages.com/institutes.html
and then click on Stosny's "more info"
to read what you'll learn in the institute, materials provided, etc. plus
a dramatic article that compares the Compassion
Workshop approach to other domestic violence treatments.
For article:

Stosny will also offer three workshops during the conference including the
following:

Steven Stosny, PhD
Why do we hurt the ones we love and how can we stop? This 12-session program
teaches self-regulation to eliminate physical abuse in 87% of cases. Angry
adolescents included.

And we are also introducing another program on Domestic Violence:

Skills for Transforming Relationship Violence
Terry Brennen, MA & Patricia Kitchener, MA
Too often, violence programs focus on blame & archaic gender stereotypes.
This 16-wk program helps couples understand the dynamics of power & control
and move towards conscious relating.

And, actually, ALL the couples communication workshops are violence
reduction programs. Violence is just at the bottom of the scale of ways to
communicate. We can all learn better ways to let our partners know how we're
feeling.

>Any chance of John Gottman presenting at Smart Marriages?
Not this year. He presented at two previous Smart Marriages conferences but
says he doesn't want to present again till he has some significant NEW
research. I know that's pretty funny to all of you who would willing
sit and listen to him discuss his old research for days. However you can
order his past conference tapes - they're terrific and
are only $10 for the audio or $25 for the video. Ask for keynote tapes
