Steinem: "I am happy and surprised"

GLORIA STEINEM, the pioneering feminist who once derided marriage as
"designed for a person and a half", has become a first-time bride at the
age
of 66.

Ms Steinem, co-founder of Ms. magazine, married David Bale, 61, the father
of Christian Bale, the Shaft and American Psycho actor. Mr Bale, an
African-born entrepreneur, lived for many years in Britain, where he
worked
as a pilot and helped to import the first skateboards.

He moved to Los Angeles a decade ago. This is his third marriage.

The ceremony took place at sunrise on Sunday at the rural Oklahoma home of
Ms Steinem's friend, Wilma Mankiller, a former chief of the Cherokee
Nation.
The service was conducted by an Oklahoma judge and Charlie Soap, a
Cherokee
spiritual person who is Ms Mankiller's husband. The word "partners" was
substituted for "husband and wife".

Ms Steinem, who became a feminist icon with such books as Outrageous Acts
and Everyday Rebellions and Revolution from Within, once dismissed
marriage
as an institution that destroyed relationships. In 1987, she said that it
was unlikely she would ever marry because a woman becomes a
"semi-non-person" when she marries.

In a statement issued yesterday by Voters for Choice, a lobby group she
helped to set up, she sounded a different tune. "Though I've worked many
years to make marriage more equal, I never expected to take advantage of
it
myself," she said.

"I'm happy, surprised, and one day will write about it, but for now I hope
this proves what feminists have always said - that feminism is about the
ability to choose what's right at each time of our lives."

Ms Steinem has no plans to adopt her husband's surname. She is still a
consulting editor at Ms. and will continue to be known as Ms Steinem.
