Response to article about treating internet sex addiction
Treating online addiction by sending eMail to persons needing assistance
seems a little askew to me. I can understand having a Web site to
connect
with addicts (get 'em where they are), but actually serving them over the
Net seems to contrary to the concept of recovery.
UNLESS, of course, if "recovery" is defined as replacing one surfing
activity that is deemed negative or destructive (like the specific subset
of
online addiction which is pornographic or adulterous) with other forms of
surfing (i.e. to self-help, self-education sites). Then, possibly, some
form of "recovery" is possible but certainly not full recovery.
Personally, I believe this may be (in many cases) like fueling the fire
with
gasoline instead of kerosene. The addiction is not extinguished unless
replacement behaviors are introduced and substituted for compulsion to go
to
the Net.
Unfortunately, the convenience and accessibility of the Net cannot be
used
as a justification for counseling online addicts over the Internet.
Counseling online addicts through eMail is encouraging them to go to the
Net
for their answers -- instead of rewarding them with a more diverse
lifestyle
by telling addicts, "The first step is to push back your chair and walk
away
from the monitor."
