NBC & ABC News on Marriage Movement - CHANGED TO WEDNESDAY JUNE 7TH
_________________
Second, the notice that ABC and NBC would be head-to-head on the June 6th
Evening News broadcasts with features on the Marriage Movement was wrong.
They
are still head-to-head, but both are moved to Wednesday night June 7th.
Both will include footage on Florida Marriage legislation and results.
Or that's
what we're told....
Both say date could change if there's movement on Elian (apparently
that's brewing)...
or any big news can bump us.
NBC has also interviewed Marriage Movement folks in Michigan and is also
scheduled to feature the 2000 Edition "State of Our Unions: The Social
Health of Marriage in America" report of The National Marriage Project by
Popenoe and Whitehead. The report includes the special feature article
"Sex Without Strings, Relationships Without Rings: Today's Young Singles
Talk About Mating and Dating".
The full report will be distributed at the Smart
Marriages Conference in Denver and will also be available on-line on June
8

ELAINE BLOOM GIVEN GOOD CHANCE OF GOING TO WASHINGTON
______________________
Many of you will remember Rep Elaine Bloom who presented a keynote at our
1998
Smart Marriages Conference celebrating the passage of
the landmark Florida Marriage Preparation and Preservation Act of 1998
which
Elaine authored. This was the legislation that provides marriage
education skills education in Florida high schools, offers a marriage
license incentive
for couples who take at least a 4 hour premarital skills education class,
requires divorce
education for all couples with minor children who are seeking a divorce
to both
encourage reconciliation and prevent redivorce (75% of couples remarry),
and provides a handbook for all marriage license applicants. Rep Bloom
was able to build bipartisan sponsorship and a strong coalition of
support and the bill passed both houses almost unanimously and the
Governor signed the legislation which went into effect in January, 1999!!
A feat unsurpassed in any other state.
Rep Bloom is now running for the U.S. Congress where she would deliver
her pro family/pro marriage message and champion our issues at the
national level. She's in a very tough race. To SUPPORT her visit her web
site at www.elainebloom.com - diane

MESSAGE for AOL SUBSCRIBERS
_______________
If you're on AOL, you have probably assumed I was on vacation or too busy
preparing for the conference to keep up with the newsletter. Actually,
the posts have been
going out on a regular basis, but those with AOL addresses had an
"interruption in
service" - AOL blocked delivery of the newsletter between May 6 and
June 4.
Visit the archive
http://archives.his.com/smartmarriages/index.html#start
to see what you missed - approximately 30 messages to the newsletter
including
the new Special discount 7-Video package, the new IMAGO Couples Education
Program,
the CMFCE 2000 Book Award announcement, "The Case for Marriage Quiz",
and numerous articles, research, surveys and notices.
Things appear to be working for the time being, however, we're told that
many newsletters have this same AOL delivery problem. If you have a
second non-AOL address, please
consider subscribing at the alternative address to avoid this problem.
Also be aware that if you have an anti-spam option on your email package
or through AOL or another ISP you may have set it so that
the newsletter can't get through! We include terms in the newsletter
like
"special discount offer" and "Sex" and "Hot" - as in Hot Monogamy and
Marital
Sex as it Ought To Be - two courses at the conference.

PREP & FAMILY WELLNESS CONFERENCE INSTITUTES
____________________________
Many of you have received your Smart Marriages conference badges this
week, the rest of you can expect them to arrive soon or will pick them up
at the conference. It appears I've created confusion about the PREP and
Family Wellness institutes by enclosing in the badge mailing the Room
Locator which begins with omits the Tuesday listings. I didn't include
Tuesday (on either end) due to lack of space on the page. I assumed the
PREP institute attendees KNEW the PREP institute begins on Tuesday and
would arrive and we could direct you to the Prep institute room - PREP
being the only session that begins on Tuesday. I didn't include the
final Tuesday, figuring those of you who were registered for the closing
Family Wellness institute #901 knew it was Monday AND Tuesday and you'd
know the room for Tuesday. Several of you have emailed concerned about
when PREP was starting. Others were concerned about whether Family
Wellness was indeed two days. PREP #101 is a three day training -
Tuesday, Wed and Thursday - June 27, 28 and 29th. It's in the Majestic
Ballroom all three days. Family Wellness, Part II, #901 is two days,
Monday and Tuesday, both days in the Silver Room.
There is still space in the PREP & Family Wellness and all the other
institutes and there is still time to register. Please email if you have
any other questions.
Also, if you have a hotel room to cancel or you are looking for a hotel
room, please email me. Don't cancel any hotel rooms. Please transfer
them to me. Also, if you were given
a high room rate at the Adam's Mark, I suggest you check back as the room
rates are
all over the place. You can cancel the higher rate and book at a lower
rate. Also,
the Comfort Inn which is a very nice hotel 2 blocks from the Adam's Mark
(303-296-0400) seems to be giving an $83 government rate. - diane

TEEN RISK TAKING DELINES
_____________________
Washington, D.C., June 6, 2000
Today's high school students take fewer health risks overall than a decade
ago, with fewer teens regularly engaging in two or more harmful
activities,
such as smoking, fighting, or using drugs. These findings from a new
Urban
Institute report, Teen Risk-Taking: A Statistical Portrait.
The report also reveals a disturbing countertrend among Hispanic teens who
do not report the same overall decline. Even so, the portrait shows that
almost all teens--including the risk-takers--are involved in desirable
family, school, or community activities. For full details:
