from: Smart Marriages

Dear CMFCE,

I sent this request out last month but they are now revising
their search - they realized that 30 year marriages are too
rare, that if they've lasted 20 years before throwing in the
towel that's notable. How sad. This was my original cover
note:

If you are able to help this background researcher for the
New York Times Magazine please contact her directly and ASAP. They are
compiling a photo essay on people ending long-term marriages.
(As you may be aware that is a new "trend"... as the Arps point
out, the over thirty-years married is the only group in which
divorce rates are increasing.)
I already filled her in on our mission and the "wonders" of
marriage education. So, if you have couples who divorced
and then repaired, or who are in the process of divorcing
but also are making a last-ditch Retrouvaille or PAIRS or
other marriage education attempt to see if things are salvageable,
that might be an interesting angle for them. Remember they
must be married at least 30 years to be part of this. -diane

That has changed, now they only require 20 years - see her new
request:

Dear Diane,
I am doing research for The New York Times Magazine and we are pursuing a
story about divorce among people who, after 20 or more years of marriage
(NOTE: our previous request was 30 years or more) who are in the process
of
considering a divorce, going through or divorce, or who have recently been
divorced. We are looking to determine if divorce later in life can be
considered a new trend or
phenomenon now happening in America.

With the utmost respect to the subjects, the magazine is looking to
approach
this topic by making strong elegant portraits of selected couples
(photographed either alone or together) and conducting brief
interviews in which each couple’s unique experience and process will be
discussed. The editors are interested in learning about each couple’s
thoughts on divorce, what the process feels like and why, after so many
years of marriage, they are at this particular point. This topic is being
addressed primarily as a photo essay with excerpts of interviews near the
photos. Due to the fact that finding willing couples or former couples
is a
difficult task, we are also very interested individuals willing to talk
about their divorce who meet the basic criteria.

Please contact me AS SOON AS POSSIBLE if you are seriously interested in
participating in this story or if you would like to discuss this further
for
more information. If you don't mind, please include your telephone number
so I can call you. Many thanks.
