I would appreciate learning about models of integrated care that have proven financially sustainable for the behavioral health providers working in pediatric primary care practices.
As a psychologist who has been collaboratively co-located in a large private pediatric practice for over a decade I have developed a deep appreciation of the value of on-site behavioral health services in pediatric primary care. I would like to know if others have found ways to make this work financially sound so that it may be more universally conducted.
It appears that the patient-centered medical (or health) home model will facilitate the primary care providers' ability to secure reimbursement for such services as behavioral health prevention, screening, consultation, and case management. I have been unsuccessful in learning how behavioral health will be compensated for these same services which we also provide in primary care.
Somewhat unique to pediatrics is that the Health and Behavior Codes which psychologists are able to use, do not fully apply to pediatric care as many children referred to the on-site behavioral health provider are physically healthy. Although APRNs may bill for their services "incident to" the physicians, my understanding is that behavioral health providers are not able to do the same.
Any guidance/resources/input which can be used to develop financially sustainable models which will allow for widespread behavioral health participation in pediatric primary care would be greatly appreciated!
