Michael,

I would also encourage you to review the stories highlighted in the most recent edition of the National Council's Magazine. We feature over a dozen stories from integration efforts across the country. I would be happy to help connect you to other community behavioral health providers who would could provide an excellent presentation on this topic.

I would like to invite members of this list serve to participate the
Northeast Region Meeting of the Society for the Teaching of Family
Medicine. The conference will take place in Rye, New York from Oct. 29
to Nov. 1, 2009. The theme for this year's conference is "The New Deal
in Healthcare: A Medical Home for All." One of the tracks in the
conference will be the integration of primary and behavioral health
care. We are interested in having presentations on projects that are
attempting to either provide behavioral health services in primary care
setting or primary care services in a behavioral health setting.

As a director of a mental health center, I feel this is a wonderful
opportunity to meet with primary care providers and educators who are
very committed to the better integration of care. Given the discussions
going on regarding the U.S. healthcare system, I believe it is critical
that mental health professionals build linkages with our primary care
colleagues.

The Society supports the growth of Family Medicine. It promotes medical
student interest in Family Medicine, and supports residency programs.
It develops programs and services that create coalitions and linkages
among those who wish to improve primary care to all segments of the
population. The Society is national in scope. The Northeast Region
includes all the states from Maine to Virginia. However, attendance is
not limited to any of those states.

If you are interested in attending and/or presenting or have any
questions please feel free to send me an e-mail or call. Michael

Hi all

I am passing on a request for recommendations and resources regarding
training for practicing primary care clinicians to be able to treat
behavioral health issues in clinic.

What was requested: "We need specific training to deal with major
psychiatric disorders as the primary care provider. This would
include medical updates on the disorders and specific training on use
of medications. We should learn both "optimal" and formulary based
therapies (ie Medi-cal formulary)

There are three principal areas of interest:
1. Depression
2. Affective disorders (ie manic depressive)
3. Thought disorders (schizophrenia, schizoaffective)

Some of the training could be selected reading for us chosen by a
psychiatrist (background information). True false questions or exam
based learning is good too. Lectures created specifically for our
needs could also be successful."
Thanks for any suggestions
