There is no univerally accepted definition. I have a paper that is cited often on the distinctions. It is
Blount, A. (2003). Integrated primary care: Organizing the evidence. Families, Systems
& Health: 21, 121-134, 2003.
If anyone wants a copy, I will send them one.

Subject: [PC-BH-Integration] co-location vs integration
What are the key distinguishing characteristics between co-location and integration?
I need to succinctly describe this to some clinics that are considering their model for providing BH and PC on site. Is there a source that conveniently describes the distinctions?

We've been working with the Hogg Foundation for Mental Health for about
three years. We're an FQHC and using the care manager model similar to
IMPACT. We tried co-location - it didn't work. We've been funded for
service expansion funds from HRSA which stabilized the project. I'll be
glad to respond to specific requests for information -- the Hogg website has
a lot of the model information at

We are searching for information related to the length of time that organizations have in place related to computers locking users out of the system. We are attempting to gather information from our colleagues to assist us in establishing a benchmark. We have had a request from 2 areas within our organization to lengthen the amount of time at which the system locks a user out. They are as follows:
1. A 24X7 crisis hotline unit that is located in a secure area with key pad entry. Currently the system locks the user out after 10 minutes of no activity causing frequent log ins. No clients enter this area, only employees.
2. An outpatient clinic providing medication management services and outpatient psychotherapy services. The minimum length of service is 30 minutes and the maximum is 90 minutes. This unit is in a secure area with key pad entry, each provider of service is in a private office, clients are escorted in and out of the office area by the clinician treating them. The system locks users out after 10 minutes of no activity.
We would appreciate any information you may will willing to share with us.
Thank you for your consideration.

As someone who trains mental health professionals to work in primary
care
( http://www.integratedprimarycare.com/Certificate%20Program_Email.htm <http://www.integratedprimarycare.com/Certificate%20Program_Email.htm> ) I
am not surprised to hear you say the co-location doesn't work, but I
wonder if you would be willing to say a bit more about what is behind
that statement. I think it could be helpful to people who are earlier
in the process.

Because the lucky 100 who get the service doesn't match the mission of
primary care, which serves everybody who walks through the door. That
is one of another 300 reasons that I could cite. Hope you are well!

Are the "lucky" those who already have been identified and have been in the Mental Health system? If so, how many are SMI?
