We find the HADS very useful on the inpatient service. We screen all of
the "rule out MI" folks we can get to. Hospital Anxiety and Depression
Screen (I hope I got the words right). It is from the UK, free, tons of
literature and well normed. Simpler than the phq 9 and valid for
anxiety. Specially designed to be used in the hospital where lots of
people will normally endorse all of the physical signs of depression,
whether they are depressed or not. Google it up.

I don't know how long you are able to see people in the hospital, but I
wonder if you might be able to use some simple and clinically useful
outcome measures to answer the question, "are people getting better as a
result of these behavioral health services?" For example, for people who
are referred for depression perhaps you could follow the PHQ-9 and/or
the Herth Hope Index. Just a thought. Denise
