An observation-
There is ample research literature that suggests that consultation and training as primary interventions do not, by themselves, generate organizational change, impact provider behavior or influence patient outcomes. Similarly screening efforts as primary interventions enhance identification but just as often do not result in impact on provider practice or patient outcomes (see Gilbody et al, and Coyne).

The practice reengineering literature is clear that to really affect patient outcomes, office systems reorganization with a focus on a specific structured intervention that meets clinical operational and financial dimensions of practice, that generates sustainable change (see Dietrich et al).. The Collaborative to Improve Behavioral Healthcare Access (C-IBHA)
launched its inaugural event last week in New Orleans, LA with technical
assistance provided by Dr. Harold Pincus and his colleagues, Drs. Steve
Cole, Amy Kilbourne and Karen Scott Collins.

Seventeen non-profit healthcare organizations in Greater New Orleans,
including primary care, mental health and substance abuse providers,
attended the two day event and are working on their plans to integrate
behavioral health screenings and quality improvement measures in their
practices.

It is encouraging to be a part of your list serv and I look forward to
sharing C-IBHA progress reports as we move forward.
