This
is the ISA/Intelligence Studies Section (ISA/ISS) call for paper/panel proposals
with a deadline of 1 June 2012 for the 3-6 April 2013 Conference in San
Francisco, California. Additional information below, with the pdf posted here: http://www.scribd.com/doc/92530207/Intelligence-Studies-Section-Call-for-Papers-for-ISA-2013
ISA/ISS,
one of twenty-four sections within the International Studies Association (ISA),
is the primary venue for presenting new intelligence studies research and
scholarship: from evaluations of intelligence analysis methodology to espionage
to comparative intelligence systems. If it is research about intelligence, ISS
is the venue to present it. For more on ISS, see: http://iss.loyola.edu/
At
the March 2012 conference in San Diego, ISA/ISS sponsored 17 panels with about
85 different speakers addressing intelligence studies. Panel topics in 2012
included: Intelligence Transformation in New
Democracies; Intelligence and Covert Action; Intelligence and Surveillance in
the Information Age; Explaining and Evaluating Intelligence Analysis; Meeting
the Demands of Cybersecurity; Intelligence and the Private Sector; Learning from
Intelligence Successes and Failures; and
more. For those panels and those of previous years, see:http://iss.loyola.edu/iss_panels2012.pdf and http://iss.loyola.edu/past-panels.html
If
you would like to submit a paper or panel proposal, all you have to do is write
up a short description/abstract of the paper you intend to submit or panel you
put together, and then submit it by following the instructions after logging
onto the myISA website, here: http://isanet.ccit.arizona.edu/myisa/
Proposals on any topic related to intelligence studies will be
considered for acceptance. If
your proposal deals with intelligence studies, be sure to submit it with the
“Intelligence Studies Section” as your first choice of section…that will
increase its chances of being accepted. Proposals from working practitioners
and MA/PhD students encouraged.
Since
the theme of the ISA Convention in 2013 is ‘The Politics of International
Diffusion: Regional and Global Dimension’, some panel or paper topic ideas
related to the concept of “international diffusion” include (but are not
limited to):
· Understand/Explain
Spread of Intelligence Methods and Practices(state to state
or other actors including private sector companies and terrorists)
· Evaluate
Implications of International Diffusion of Technology(affecting collection, processing, information security) or National Intelligence Models (organization, oversight, relations
with policy, etc) or Increasing Public
Awareness of Intelligence
· Evaluate
Mechanisms of Knowledge Diffusion about Intelligence(Education in secondary/university context, Media, Freedom of Information
Legislation/Practice; Historiography through Official Histories or National
Archives)
Additional
items to be aware of:
1. 2013
ISA Conference Information:
The website for the full 2013 conference, providing much additional information
on the broader content and logistical aspects, is here: http://www.isanet.org/annual_convention/
2. Working
Groups and Innovative Panels:Working groups provide a forum for dialogue and interaction
around designated issue areas and consist
of small group discussion (20-25 participants) of specific subject matter at three
points during the conference, with goal being to stimulate
new research questions and project ideas, and contribute to development of new
communities of scholars. Submission
deadline is 15 June 2012. Also, Innovative Panels are unique forums (creative
experiments) for participants to dialogue, network, and learn in a forum
different than that of a traditional panel. Submission deadline is 15 May
2012. Additional information on both, including processes to apply, are here: http://www.isanet.org/annual_convention/specialty.html#wg
3. Workshop
Grants:These are funded workshops
offering new and innovative collaborative research involving scholars drawn
from the global international studies community with the goal being some tangible
product, like a book proposal, follow-on conference, or other way to capitalize
on the meeting. Two categories of grants exist: Venture Research Workshop Grants of
up to $25,000 each and Catalytic Research Workshop Grants of up to
$5,000 each. Submission deadline is 31 July 2012. Additional information including
application process is here:
http://www.isanet.org/awards-grants/workshop-grants.html
4. Travel
Grants:If you are a member
of the ISS and will be applying for a travel grant from ISA, please let me know
directly in addition to making the application with ISA. Additional
information on travel grants is here:
http://www.isanet.org/awards-grants/travel-grants.html/
5. Junior Scholar
Symposium:Per the ISA program
chairs: “ISA decided to abolish the poster sessions. They will be replaced by a
new and exciting initiative, the Junior Scholar Symposium. The JSS offers
junior scholars the opportunity to present and discuss their research in an
environment focused on graduate student professional development. It affords
participants a focused, dedicated, atmosphere to provide consistent and useful
feedback. The JSS also provides fantastic networking opportunities;
participants will interact closely with senior scholars in their field as well
as with peers across universities. More information can be found at:
