The Canadian Association of Security and Intelligence Studies (CASIS) 
announces the 7th annual competition for the Geoff Weller Memorial 
Prize. The prize is awarded annually by CASIS in memory of Professor 
Geoff Weller, past president of CASIS and the first president of the 
University of Northern British Columbia, for the best undergraduate 
and graduate paper on a subject dealing with intelligence, security, 
or law enforcement.

Eligibility Criteria
The competition is open to undergraduate or graduate students 
enrolled at a Canadian university, or any Canadian student enrolled 
at a university outside of Canada. Essays must address some dimension 
of intelligence, security, or law enforcement issues in any time 
period and in any country. Submissions can be from any Humanities or 
Social Sciences discipline, inter-disciplinary programmes, or law 
school. Only papers submitted during the 2008-2009 academic year are 
eligible.



The Award

One undergraduate and one graduate paper will be awarded. Winners 
will be invited to present their papers at the 2009 CASIS Annual 
Conference, held in October in Ottawa, October 29-31. Economy air 
travel, accommodation, and conference registration will be covered. 
In addition, the winners will receive a $400 cash prize. $250 cash 
prizes for runners-up may also be awarded.



Submission

Undergraduate essays cannot exceed 30 pages including footnotes. 
Graduate papers cannot exceed 40 pages including notes.. Theses are 
not eligible, but chapters from theses can be submitted within the 
length specified. Submissions must include the author's name, 
institution, and contact information, as well as course details and 
grades/comments the essay received. A letter sponsoring the 
submission from the instructor who marked it is also welcome. The 
deadline for submissions is June 30, 2009.  Send an electronic copy
