It appears that the FBI considered William Moulton Marston, who 
invented the lie detector and created the comic book character Wonder 
Woman under the pseudonym Charles Moulton, to be a "phoney" and a 
"crackpot":

Yet today, the FBI uses his invention (the lie detector) to guide 
investigations and to screen applicants and employees. Marston's FBI
