Since the question of AI has come up I can provide some anecdotal
information about its operations in the US. I was a member through
out the 1980s. During this period AI America was going to hold its
annual conference in Dallas. (Recently retired as the Emergency
Management Coordinator for Dallas.) Some local folks not happy with
their relationship with the Dallas Police Department started
bombarding AI was complaints about racism within the Dallas Police.
No proof was offered, just complaints of racism. AI then opted to
move the conference outside of Dallas. I wrote the US AI
headquarters on several occasions voicing my concerns about their
move and asking that it be reconsidered. My letters to AI were never
answered. After some more diligent investigation on my part I
determined that basically the AI operation in American is run by its
staff and see no need to be responsive to its membership. In this
particular case AI was supporting a local, radical agenda.
Based upon that one incident and the failure of AI even to answer one
letter about this decision, I believe that there is a very high
chance that AI can indeed be a political organization. Certainly a
more diligent research into the make up of AI and the politics of the
folks running may prove instructive.

Dear Mr Farmer,
Concerning the Amnesty Int'l report in particular, and the US
actions in the
so-called "war on terror", I would like to make some comments:

I would like to know the reasons why you think AI is not
apolitical (aside
from the fact that it attacks the US). AI has worked for 40 years to help
keep human rights in good standing all over the world, from China to Peru.
AI has just pointed some ugly facts about the US, just like it has done so in
the past to many other countries. Incidentally, AI is not alone on that
task. Other NGO and international groups like the Red Cross and the European
Union have also raised doubts about the actions of the US from Guantanamo to
Afghanistan. Is the Red Cross also politically biased against the US?
