Mr. Prosano;
Thanks for your extended reply to my comments. Since you provide your
background in CI, perhaps fairness dictates that I should provide mine. My views
are founded in over four decades of work in the signals intelligence field.
While my comments were limited to a reaction to Mr. Maschke's statement that
" I think that the whistleblowers who revealed this illegal
domestic
surveillance program to the press are to be commended, not condemned."
you appear to be tilting at windmills I did not paint.
I did not comment on the legality or illegality of the White House directed
surveillance program.
I did not comment on the role of SIGINT versus other intelligence sources.
I did not comment on the degree of reliance on SIGINT.
I simply indicated that the individual who revealed the existence of the
program, from a classified document, was not a whistleblower but rather a
leaker of classified national security information. I said whistleblowing is
legal; --you can give them your name. Leaking of classified information is
criminal; --you don't allow your name to be used; you demand anonymity. And we don't
commend criminals.
And the type of damage to the national security I was talking about is the
type exemplified by the well documented case of the Sigint leak which resulted
in the death of two hundred forty one US Marines in Lebanon.
Mike Levin
