[Intelforum] Venona: Number of intercepted messages?

Budiansky gives the figure of 750,000 messages intercepted from and to
the various Soviet intelligence agencies (and embassies), roughly during
WW II. Nigel West also mentions 750,000.

Neither Budiansky nor West give any authority for it. There is no
footnote explaining where the number comes from.

What was the source or authority for 750,000?
