Actually, it's even more complicated than that, ie, it's not just 
limited to distinguishing between freedom-fighting and terrorism. 
There's also vigilanteism and civil obedience to add to the mixture 
of combinations and permutations.

Simplistic but is it valid.

If Al Qeada attacks civilian centers in the US because they don't like the
US influence world wide do they fit the mode of being someone's freedom
fighter or are they just plain terrorist?
